Thank you Beth for your interest in attempting to jog my memory. No, the
store was in Lytham St. Anne's. I still correspond with a friend in Bolton
le Sands, Nr. Lancaster she was the girl responsible for introducing us to
the store. Joan was married before me and kindly loaned me her
bridesmaid's dresses and shoes. The dresses were a perfect fit for my
sister-in-law and my best friend. The shoes were too large but Flo and
Margaret stuffed the toes with tissue paper. I rented my dress, made a
couple of changes to it, by hand. It was returned to the owner in it's
former state.

Dear Joyce I did not remember the tragedy Michael mentioned nor the town it
took place in. However I do know Lytham St. Anne's, a lovely little village
just a few miles from Blackpool. I remember it well because during the war
four of my friends and I visited a department store there, cannot remember
the name of it, and made arrangements to have the resident tailor make
tailored suits for us (costumes as we called them). The tailor would then
visited us in Lancaster and fit the suits part way through the making.
When the suits were completed we would take the bus to Lytham St. Anne's and
try on the completed outfits. We were always delighted with the end
product and I missed those wonderful hand made suits when I came to Canada.
Through the years on my return trips to visit family I have often visited
Lytham St. Anne's, walked along the sands and around the pleasant small
town. Ivy from Lancashire

Hi Michele, The tragedy was reported in all the Lancashire papers, that I
saw at least. My husband was stationed there, The closest well known place
was a little sea-side village called Lytham - St. Annes, The air base was
just a mile or two away, Freckleton. All the men were stunned, and did all
that they could to assist. It was very difficult for them, as I believe that
every family in the village lost someone. It was a very sad and devastating
time for everyone concerned. We forget as we get older, the terrible things
that happened all over Europe and Alli the other places at War. This is why
Memorial Day should be important to us.
On a bit happier note, I have downloaded quite a bit of your site this
month, I have a friend (Also from Lancashire as am I.) who is not a War
Bride, but my husband and I sponsored her and her husband and son to this
country, and loves it here after over 50 years. Your columns make her
remember that old life, (she is in her mid eighties too.) so you have a
faithful reader in Elsie. You do such an outstanding Job Michele,
Love Joyce.
