I am a Warbride from Lancashire and do not remember the tragedy you relate
to as being reported news during the war. However, I guess it would not be
wise during hostilities to report such information. It would be many of
such unreported news during the War. Killed by friendly fire! Yet, at the
present time this type of accident is made much of. I usually have as much
sympathy for the victims as those who committed the act. Ivy Kellam

AIR CRASH
A US 8th Army Air Force B-24 Liberator bomber crashes into the Holy Trinity
School in Lytham Road in Freckelton, Lancashire, on August 23, 1944, killing
38 children. Twenty-three others, including teachers, civilians and the
three man bomber crew, also died. This was the worst aircraft crash in
Britain during the war. The bomber, from the American Base Air Depot No. 2
at nearby Warton, was on a test flight when the pilot received a radio
signal to land immediately as an electrical storm was heading their way. The
B-24 never made it back to base but at 10.30 am crashed in heavy rain into
the village school. The village centre was turned into a sea of flames as
nearly 3,000 gallons of aviation fuel ignited.
