Dear War Brides and War Bride children:
My name is Melynda Jarratt and many of you know me as the historian of the
Canadian War Brides through my volunteer work as the webmaster of
www.CanadianWarBrides.com.
Currently, I am writing a book on Canadian War Brides for Tempus Publishing,
a leading English publisher with a stellar reputation for its publications
on Archaeology and History. Tempus is associated with the BBC History
Magazine's Community History Awards and the English Heritage Festival of
History.
My book will focus on British War Brides (England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland) who married Canadian servicemen they met during the Second
World War. It will be published in England for a British audience. I am
interested in hearing from any War Brides who feel they have a compelling
story to tell about their experiences meeting, falling in love with and
marrying a Canadian overseas, about leaving their family behind, of their
journey to Canada on board the War Bride ships and settling into life here.
I hope to hear from women representing every province and territory in
Canada and I invite War Bride children, whose mothers have passed away, to
tell their mother's stories. I am particularly interested in hearing from
those who have never appeared in print before. My deadline for submission of
the manuscript is March 1 so if you would like to particicpate, I need to
hear from you very soon.
If you are one of these women, or you are the son or daughter of a War
Bride, please contact me by phone TOLL FREE at 1-877-886-2836, by phone at
506-450-4567, by cel at 506-440-4567, by email at
I may also be reached at home at 506-455-3568.

For those who do not know of me or my work, I have been documenting the War
Bride experience since 1987, when I first began working on my Masters Thesis
on the War Brides of New Brunswick. Over the past two decades I have worked
in a mainly volunteer capacity on numerous War Bride projects, from the
History Television documentary film War Brides: From Romance to Reality
(2001), to the History of Cunard Exhibition on board the Queen Mary II
(2003), from Canada Post's War Bride Commemorative Envelope (2005) to the
BBC Radio 4 documentary "The Pilgrim Mothers" (2005). But what I am most
proud of is having had the opportunity to play a leading role in seeing Year
of the War Bride 2006 declared in six of ten provinces across Canada (New
Brunswick, Manitoba, British Columbia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and
Nova Scotia), with a seventh (Saskatachewan) declaring November 2006 "Month"
of the War Bride. This could not have happened without the extensive network
of War Brides, their children and grand-children who lobbied their
respective provincial governments to have War Brides recognized in 2006.
Thank you for your time and I do hope to hear from you very soon!
