Our little group met last Sunday and over tea and cookies looked at all the photos that were taken, so that we could each identify what we wanted. We (my daughter) in co-operation with our local High School, have also consolidated all the TV coverage into one tape - maybe also a DVD.
It was wonderful to relive the experience together. There were 4 brides, one husband (they renewed their vows and were such good sports), one friend, one granddaughter and one daughter. I came to this area 22 years after arriving in Canada, but the other three came here directly, and did not know each other!! When 3 war bride daughters organised a tea party last summer they met for the first time, and now, with the train trip, we have all made new friends.
Many people here watched bits on TV and there was coverage in our local paper and on the radio. I am getting 'I saw you on TV: I was watching for you' comments. where-ever I go.
What a wonderful experience it was, we owe a real big ' thank you' to Ron Jackson and Peggy Topple (both CN ticket agents) for putting so much volunteer time into making it happen, as well as all the volunteer musical groups and others who provided non-stop entertainment. For me, the most emotional highlight was the people along the tracks and in the stations, especially the children.
I am so glad I went, and now look forward to next May and the opening of the exhibit of Bev's work at the National War Museum. At present, it looks like most of my family will be going with me!
I spoke with a war bride friend yesterday and she wants me to work with her to put something in the This England magazine; she feels they need to know as people over there have a tendency to lump us together with GI Brides.
If you have not seen the Family History Monthly, which my cousin sent to me, guess who is on the cover? The actual coverage is pretty good but my cousin thought he was buying the wrong magazine. I assume a picture of a GI and bride sells more mags than a Canadian and Bride, although there were more of us and for longer. My indignant friend wants to set the record straight with the Year of the War Bride coverage, including the train ride, so we will see what happens!
Anyway, the trip was super, the hospitality wonderful, a once in a life time event. And Happy Christmas and Healthy New year to all. Cheers, Joan
