A happy return by rail

Hugs, kisses and tears marked the arrival Tuesday of Canadian war brides in
Halifax - the little city that was the first stop on their big sea-crossing
journey to a new life in this country six decades ago.
One by one, hundreds of war brides stepped off Via Rail's The Ocean and onto
a red carpet rolled out for their arrival.
A military band played, people waiting patiently inside the Hollis Street
train station applauded enthusiastically and shouts of "Hurray!" greeted a
long stream of elderly passengers heading slowly toward the terminal.
Several war brides, who are taking part in a reunion in Halifax this week,
carried tiny Canadian flags and Union Jacks. A few took a jaunty step or two
in the cool November air as they passed the brass band along the paved path
to the Via terminal.
