War brides ride the rails
Local women take train to Halifax for celebration

They were young European women in love, some no older than 19. They had met
their Canadian husbands during the Second World War and then tearfully waved
goodbye to family and friends before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to start a
new life in a country they had only read about in textbooks.

When they got here, some suffered isolation, depression and a desperate
homesickness in a time when one of the only ways to keep in touch was to
wait weeks for a reply to a handwritten letter, explained five war brides
who now live in Peterborough.

However these women - Peggie Bailey, Lena Condon, Yvonne Leahy, Nora Rome
and Joan Zwicker - were giggling and lighthearted yesterday when they sat
down with The Examiner before boarding a train to Halifax where they'll
participate in tomorrow's Year of the War Bride celebrations in their
honour.
