Kinstonian Elsie Williams is heading back to the place where she first
stepped onto Canadian soil.

The 79-year-old boarded a train yesterday afternoon and is bound for
Halifax's Pier 21, the main point of arrival for wives and children of
Canadian soldiers after the Second World War to mark the Year of the War
Bride.

The location is now a national historic site.

Along with a contingent of about 12 Quinte-area war brides and their 20
relatives, she is among an estimated 200 war brides and 150 relatives making
the voyage aboard the VIA Rail train christened Ocean.

Williams, whose husband, John, now 83, was not able to make the trip, came
to Kingston with her husband in July 1946. John had served with an
anti-aircraft battery and the two met and married in England.
