HALIFAX -- When Kay Windle's new husband, Bernie, left Europe and returned
to Canada in 1944, the couple had a code so he would know when she was
finally going to join him.
She had met the Canadian soldier in March of that year in Nottingham,
England, where she was working with the women's land army.
She married the airman from Ontario -- who went by the nickname Windy -- in
July. He was back in Canada by September.
Two months later, her family sent him a telegram.
