Burnt food and outhouses: a war bride's life
Amid celebrations of 60 years in Canada, one wife tells her tale

SPRYFIELD - Joan Schnare spent her first night in Canada sobbing along with
the lonely sound of a train whistle, as it chugged past her in-laws' Chester
home.
It was Dec. 13, 1946.
The 22-year-old war bride had arrived at Pier 21 that day - five days ahead
of her husband, army mechanic Cpl. Douglas Schnare.
Married for just a year, she'd had to meet her in-laws alone, then adjust to
a place far different from her bustling London hometown.
"I laid down in bed, and I cried and I cried," Schnare remembered last week
in her Spryfield home.
