The luncheon hosted in honour of the War Brides of this area in Southern
Alberta yesterday was very pleasant. No media, thank goodness.
We were greeted and accompanied at each stop as we made our way into the
City Hall. A smiling young man stood by the lift and made sure we
pressed the right button to go up to the next floor. Yes, it was a lift,
I am sure! Not an elevator! (grin)
We were welcomed by organizer Gillian Nish (daughter) who introduced
Mayor Bob Tarleck who had some fine words to say about us. Daughters
assisted in serving the catered lunch.
Entertainment was by way of Karoake (don't know how to spell it) WWII
songs led by a lady from Lethbridge Seniors' Club. Quite a few of us had
a warble into the microphone.
There was a tender and emotional moment as the daughters of Anne Hawkins
handed a white rose to each of the War Brides in honour of their mother
(our president) who died 3 weeks ago. A few tears were shed.
Each of us (about 25) was able to take a guest. I took my youngest
daughter who had never been to a War Bride gathering before. She was
quite impressed with the vigour and readiness to have fun that we all
displayed.
It was nice to see a half a dozen WBs from the area turn out who never
attend regular meetings. The 2 husbands in attendance were very much
appreciated.
On the journey home by car, 3 War Brides agreed that we felt honoured
and that we were touched by the recognition of our 60+ years
contributions as citizens of Canada.
Our kids can carry on into the future. As I wrote recently: "We threw
the ball, all they have to do is catch it and run with it."
Love to all,
Hazel
