Subject: Italian War Bride - Vaina Lawley (Tranquilli)
Date: Mon, 5 Jun 2006 09:15:13 -0700
I am just beginning my search, and seeking any information on this subject.
My mother was born in Tivoli, outside of Rome Italy, but she lived most of
her life in Roma. Her maiden name was Vaina Maria Tranquilli, she married
Ben J. Lawley USArmy, on May 17, 1945 in Roma Italia. I believe they were
the first Italian American marriage in the city. (I saw a news article with
photo when I was younger. (I believe it was in Il Messaggero) My father
said he met my mother bringing food to the bombed homes around the train
yard off of Via Scalo San Lorenzo. I would like to know more about this
time frame. I remember seeing a colorful certificate in a foot locker. It
was the Queen Mary. At the time of crossing my sister was approximately 6
months old. Many of the babies died, my mother said she would chew bread
and then feed it to my sister. There was much illness. So anyway I would
put the crossing in May or June of '46. I believe my father's family picked
her in NY, NY. How do I go about getting more information? Did anyone meet
or know my mother?
Thank you Sincerely, Genevieve Nieto email:
