Subject: [WarBrides] Happy Valentines Day

> My Mother arrived in Canada on February 14, 1945, on the Aquitania. She
came through Pier 21. She was was escorted by a Canadian Soldier to a train
to take her on to Toronto to meet her husbands family. My Dad was still in
England as the war was not over yet. It would be almost a years until she
would see her husband again. Although her some of her new family were not
very nice to her others were. Some family and friends came from all over to
see the English Bride and have a look at her. I have often thought how
brave she was, she doesn't think she was brave at all.

> Your story about your mother reminded me of my own experience. I
arrived in Canada in June 1945. I too was escorted by a soldier to the train
that would eventually take me to Strome, we had a stop at Winnipeg for a
day. My in-laws lived on a farm four miles from Strome, which was like a
very small hamlet with wooden sidewalks. My husband didn't arrive home until
just before Christmas. He was in the Sicily and Italy campaign and then he
came to England just as the war ended, so I saw him before I came to Canada.
I certainly missed my large family and it was 23 years before I saw them, my
mother had died in the meantime. We have been married 63 years.
Happy Valentine's Day to all the War-Brides and their children.
Mary
