For those just popping in, the YOTWB is the proposed Year of the War Bride
2006.
Joan, you are so right about the need for publicity. We who subscribe to
this list and belong to War Brides organizations forget those who quietly
( as you have pointed out) merged into the citizenship of Canada.
Like you, I sometimes find one of them. I live in an area where you would
think that everyone knows everyone else - not so, I recently learned of a
local war bride when I read her obituary. Another instance was when I went
to the post office to order War Bride envelopes. The young woman behind the
counter became very interested and said that her mother was a war bride but
that they had never heard of any War Bride organizations.
Another factor is that some chose (and still choose) not to join a War
Brides organization. They may be incapacitated, not interested or can't be
bothered. Some pay their dues to maintain their membership but never attend
meetings.
I appreciate the point you are making.
We will have to do some heavy-duty advertising/publicity if this special
recognition comes about in 2006.
Hazel
PS Another special envelope is coming out this June in honour of the Queen's
80th birthday. The stamp is lovely.
I know not all WBs are British or Commonwealth so please overlook these bits
of news.
