Subject: Update, Nov 24, Year of the War Bride
Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2005 16:49:16 -0400
Hi everyone:
I've created a new page on my website which contains all the recent
developments in our campaign to have 2006 declared Year of the War Bride in
every province and federally by the Federal Government.
http://www.canadianwarbrides.com/anniversary-canada.asp
First, as we all know, there is a federal election looming but that does not
mean it is impossible to get the federal government to declare 2006 Year of
the War Bride, it just means we'll have a bit of a delay because Parliament
will shut down for the duration of the election. We have a very unique
opportunity right now: Every single MP in this country will be out on the
hustings trying to get your vote so pop the question when he or she comes to
your door. Get a commitment that if they are elected, they will introduce a
private members bill to recognize 2006 as the Year of the War Bride. It
can't hurt to ask. The more they hear about it, the more likely it is to
happen.
Second, we do have another great opportunity to lobby our provincial
governments because unlike the federal MPs, they're not in election mode:
I'm throwing the challenge out to all of you to do just that. A New
Brunswick MLA has already committed to declaring 2006 Year of the War Bride,
and we have good news coming out of Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia,
Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The more MLAs hear about this initiative the more
likely it is to happen one province at a time. It's up to you to do contact
your MLAs, if you need help finding your MLA's contact information, write to
me here and I'll find it for you.
Let me know what you have done and who you have contacted and I'll post it
on the website. Good luck, we can do this together!
