Joan, your post brought back once again the incredible memories I have of my
Grandmother, although she wasn't a WarBride. She was brought up here in the
States and *her* war was WWI. She lost a fiancee to that war, meeting and
marrying my Grandfather years later. She was quite a lady for her time. She
had originally planned on being a nun but was told her health was too poor
for that vocation. So, being my Grandmother, she decided to become a nurse
instead. Mind you, this was a time when nursing was on the same level as
prostitution in the majority of people's minds. Her fairly wealthy and very
proper Father disowned her for that choice. I like to think he regretted
that eventually. But, the reason for this post...she loved gardening and
grew all sorts of vegetables, fruits and flowers. One of my earliest and
most beloved memories of her is sitting beside her in the back yard, a tin
pan between us as we shucked peas. No peas ever tasted as good as those
fresh ones! And, invariably, they were destined to be creamed with little
new potatoes. She also had the sweetest strawberries and her shortcake was
to die for! Our entire family still uses her recipe.
Sorry that this post is a bit off topic, but I just had to share that
wonderful memory!
Nancy
