With all the reflections of VE Day in the past week or so, I thought the
list might be interested in knowing about the Maple Leaf Legacy Project
whose site is located at:
http://www.mapleleaflegacy.ca/
This project is in remembrance of Canadian War Dead and seeks, amongst
other things, to take/archive photographs of the graves of all Canadian
Military War Dead, or of memorial plaques when graves are unknown.
I have had the honour of contributing a few photographs from the
Canadian War Cemetery in Agira, Sicily as well as from the British
Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Pune (Poonah), India known as the
Kirkee War Cemetery. Unfortunately when I visited these cemeteries it
was before the start of the Maple Leaf project and I only
tookphotographs of a few graves that held particular interest to me. My
collections are at:
http://www.kenscott.com/sicily/campaign.htm
http://www.kenscott.com/mapleleaf/Kirkee/album.html
For this latter cemetery I have just today received from friends in
India the complete set of photos for the 8 members of the RCAF who are
buried there. I will update the Kirkee site in the next few days.
If you find yourself visiting cemeteries where there are Canadian War
Dead the project would appreciate receiving your photos as
contributions. (Particularly the more remote cemeteries -- the more
accessible cemeteries have been fully photographed). The photos are
appreciated, too, by family members who have never had the opportunity
to visit the graves of their loved ones in remote locations.
