Joan, this is exactly the kind of situation I'm talking about. There is just
so much confusion. I am a Canadian born citizen. It takes 10 days and $80 (I
think it's $80 it was $80 a couple of years ago when I renewed mine) for me
to get a passport. That's it. No fooling around, no questions, just a
straight application and it's over. But War Brides and their children are
stepping into a quagmire when they make these applications because of the
uncertainty of their status. Landed Immigrant or Citizen? Fill out this
form please, fill out that form please, four months later, still no answer.
"Sorry we can't tell you because of the Privacy Act" is my favourite
response. It's just so unnecessary and typical of the bureaucratic
stagnation in Immigration.

What a mess! I did not have a passport until 1975 and it was a rigamorole
to get it - one thing they wanted was our marriage certificate and then my
husband had to prove he was a citizen. He had been naturalized on his
fathers papers in the late 20's (he was born in Holland) and we had quite a
time finding those papers. Given that he had served in the Canadian Army
overseas for four years it was a bit late to worry about his citizenship. I
am in the process of renewing my passport and they may not accept the
document that has sufficed in the past - depending on who I speak with -
apparently the large certificate which I have is 'iffy'. We shall see!
