Hi, while we're talking about books, I thought I'd tell about the book I've
just co-authored called Voices of the Left Behind, which contains a chapter
about Canadian War Brides. It's available at
http://www.canadianwarbrides.com/books.html The book was released in June
2004.
Voices of the Left Behind is about the Canadian War Children of World War
Two - children whose fathers were Canadian servicemen and whose mothers were
British or European women they met overseas during the war years. Most of
the mothers were unmarried, but the chapter about Canadian War Brides tells
the stories of children whose parents' marriages did not work out (for
whatever reason) and the war bride either returned to her homeland after
coming to Canada on the War Bride ships or she never came to Canada in the
first place. According to my research in the National Archives of Canada, of
the nearly 48,000 Canadian War Brides of World War Two, approximately 4500
never even came to Canada after the war. About 2500 of these women decided
to stay in Britain or Europe because there were better opportunities for
their husbands overseas than there were in Canada. So the war bride and her
husband stayed and raised her family there. But an estimated 2000 war
brides' marriages ended in separation and divorce and their children are
still looking for their Canadian fathers today. These are the kind of
stories you will find in the chapter on Canadian War Brides. The other 8
chapters tell the stories of children from England, Holland, Belgium, and
Germany, children who were given up for adoption, whose fathers were
Aboriginal Canadians, and children whose mothers were Canadian servicewomen
stationed overseas during the war. There are 50 personal stories and each of
the 8 chapters is preceded by an essay which outlines the historical /
social / cultural context of the period.

Thank you for the book information Susan. I just finished reading a very
interesting book, bought at a sale, about the seige of Malta and the history
of the Rock, written in the late 50s, a tale I am sure many of us vaguely
heard about during the war years. What a tale of heroism througout the
ages. This books points out the weakness and strength of people and how
they go on living with the daily threat of death. It also points out how
the right type of leadership can bring out the best in a people faced with
daily threats from all sides. Just as Churchill called for the best of
British courage and humour during those demanding days of the war. IK
