Subject: [WarBrides] Lists of war brides' arrival in local newspapers

Some interesting advice for those of you who are thinking of putting
together a remembrance of a particular war bride's journey to Canada.
All the major newspapers of the day would report the arrival of war brides
in Halifax, and then follow the war brides' journey as they made their way
past every whistlestop across the country. So starting in Halifax with the
newspaper there, you will find a detailed list of every single war bride on
every ship as it arrived, along with the name of her children, their ages,
her husband's name, and her ultimate destination in Canada. If you know the
day she arrived, all you have to do is get the newspaper from the period,
usually available in microfilm in most libraries (and if not it can be
ordered through interlibrary loan at no cost) and you can print out the copy
of the newspaper with her name on it! It's really something else to see.
In addition, as the ladies started to arrive in small towns and villages,
the local newspapers would usually do a story on the latest war bride to
arrive. So you can easily document a specific war bride's experience simply
by going to your local library. Small town libraries may not have a
microfiche reader / printer so it may require a trip to the "big city" to
get this done. It's all in the planning however. Just make sure the library
you intend to go to has a microfiche reader / printer and, at minimum, the
Halifax newspaper of the period 1945-1946-1947.
