Hello,
Agree with Hazel, we did not have a choice of whether to make a wedding
cake or have it catered. Are you kidding !!! The person who is asking these
questions, obviously DOES NOT HAVE A CLUE !!
How can you possibly save enough food to bake a wedding cake out of the
small amount of food we were allowed, per. person per. week. If we had to
save for anything we would have had to go hungry. What can you save out of 1
oz. butter per week and 1 egg every 6 weeks per. person.etc. This person
needs to realize that there was NO extra food, NO extra coupons for a wedding
dress, NO gas for privately owned cars,if we owned a car, they were put up on
blocks for the duration, we dug up our lawns and flower beds, to plant
vegetables just to get by. When we got our coupons for clothing, we had to
decide if we would buy a winter coat or a pair of shoes, then make do with
last years sweaters, dresses and underwear. We had to have a warm coat as we
pretty well had to walk everywhere, unless we were fortunate enough to be
near to a bus line.
Recall the first meal I had on the Empire Brent, taking us from
Liverpool to Halifax, when they put a basket of rolls on the table I just
stared at them, they were white, we hadn't seen white bread in years, and
they tasted heavenly. They put a piece of cheese, maybe 1/2lb., on a serving
plate in the center of the table, to be shared by several people, a girl from
Holland sitting across from me grabbed the plate, cut up the cheese and ate
the whole thing. Guess she hadn't seen any cheese in a while. It was sad, I
felt sorry for her, they must have had it worse than we did.
Heard they had been eating the tulip bulbs, hunger is a terrible thing.
Hope before this person writes whatever it is that he or she
intends to write, that they do much more checking as to the real situation
during the war years, right now they are definitely way off base.
Regards, Pam, an Aldershot,Hants. gal now in Arizona.
