It was not an uncommon thing to do with infants and very young children. I
have a photo of a six month old infant (born 1898) who was dead at the time
of the photo and know it to be fact because the child was a nephew of my
grandmother (the mother was her sister) and she told me this was the case.
The child was dressed in his burial clothes and positioned in the corner of
a couch. However, that said, I have not read that it was done for adults
but it would not surprise me. People of the era were certainly not shy about
the graphic photography of deceased individuals like outlaws, important
personages and the like. TomM

I recently saw in a Victorian album a photo that appeared to show an elderly
blind lady sitting with her hands folded. On closer examination, I began to
wonder if she had in fact passed away and that the family had recorded her
passing with a photograph. I appreciate that for many 21st century people
(including myself) this is rather a macabre way of remembering one's
ancestors, but I wondered if anyone had come across a similar memento?
