The earliest date for an American Daguerreotype Portrait is probably in the
summer of 1840 taken by John W. Draper of his daughter Dorothy Katherine
Draper. Others have claimed earlier dates, but most of the claims were made much
later than Draper's which was substantiated by a letter by Draper written on
July 28, 1840. Other claimants and Draper himself "remembered" making earlier
portraits and surviving accounts record mention of earlier portraits, but
the only surviving daguerreotype portrait is the above mentioned picture of
Draper's daughter, though the image has faded completely, but was still extant
in 1933 when copy photographs were made. See Photography and The American
