Hello:
I'm sorry that this happened to you. There are many places where this is a
practice and everyone needs to be careful and read the fine print anytime
you sign up for any free offer. Just figure if they ask for a credit or
debit card number that you will be charged unless you cancel.
The music download sites are notorious for this. It is really a widespread
practice online and in retail outlets like video stores where they will give
you three months of magazines free and then charge your video account unless
you cancel. One video store employee told me that I was the first person
that he had seen read the fine print on the magazine offer.
I've made it a practice to not even take the free offer unless it's
something I might like to have. And I have to write myself a reminder to
cancel and I still check my bank or credit card statement to make sure that
I'm not charged - because like you I have forgotten to do so on occasion.
Ancestry is not doing anything illegal, it is written down, they have done
this for years as have other businesses. Read everything, don't just click
"yes" on anything or give anyone your credit card info. Right now I'm trying
to change my email address on my Ebay account and they won't change it
without a credit card number. I'm really not sure what that is all about.
Companies have to make money -- they can't stay in business any other way.
They offer the free trial so you can try out their product and decide if you
want to keep it. It really is a good way to get customers, but can be
perceived as sneaky if you haven't read the fine print.
