Hello all,

A distant cousin has been transcribing her gt-grandfather's genealogy
notes, and has sent the following written in 1939;

"John McLennan was in 1887 High Sheriff of Utah and head of the State
Police there. Unfortunately however in a round-up on a large scale of a
gang of rustlers in 1890 he was accidentally shot dead... a number of
American papers giving details of the occurrence in which 'McLennan' was
highly praised for his strategy and bravery. He and his posse had already
secured their quarry when he was killed and there was a great sympathy
expressed on the part of the government for his untimely death as he was
bidding fair to put an end to a reign of terror in the State, which had
lasted for a number of years before his appointment."

John was born on Cape Breton Island, with parents from the area in
Scotland I am researching (Coigach). I know very little of Utah genealogy
or historical sources, but would love to have photocoppies or
transcriptions of news regarding this event, for inclusion as a file on my
own website, appreciate any help!

All the best from the brink of Niagara,

Donald.
