Hi,

My name is Elizabeth Wright and am new to this list.

I have been asked by my second cousin in England to inquire about her great grandfather ROBERT PARRY. He emigrated from England to Salt Lake City in 1862. He was accompanied by his wife MARGARET and some of their children.
The children were SARAH, MARY, ELIZABETH, THOMAS, JANE, MARGARET, DAVID AND MARTHA. Martha (my cousin's grandmother) was 12 years old at that time and stayed behind in England with one of her older sisters either Sarah or Mary. The family story is, that this family became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and as Robert was a stonemason, he found work in Salt Lake City building the temple there. There was a lot of ill feeling in the family because of this and when a cousin visited England he wasn't allowed in the house. My cousin's mother who was 18 at the time, was allowed show him the town where they lived which was Widnes, Cheshire.

My cousin is curious as to how her great grandfather and his family travelled across the US. She believes they sailed from Liverpool sometime in 1862 and presumably arrived in New York. She feels there must be people still alive who have had stories passed down to them as she has and would dearly like to compare notes.

I have consulted the IGI and found a record for ROBERT PARRY AND MARGARET DAVIS. It was under the heading "Sealing of couples living by proxy 1851-1889" 1st Nov. 1869. I do not know what this means. Was it a form of marriage? Would they need to go through this rite to join the church? The ROBERT AND MARGARET PARRY I am looking for were already married for quite a long time before 1869.

Sorry this is so long but if any one could help in any way it would be greatly appreciated.

Elizabeth Wright
