Subject: [UPP-CAN] MILLAR birth, 1852-3
Date: Fri, 30 May 2003 00:16:23 -0500

New to this List - have just discovered a birth in 1852-3 for a Margaret MILLER/MILLAR. Her parents
were William MILLAR and Jane A. HALCRO who were Orcadians, they married in Orkney in 1850. Quite
surprised to find a probable child of this marriage, William died only a few years into the
marriage, and there were no children noted as being born in Orkney.

The 1861 Census for Orphir, Orkney shows Margaret MILLER as 8 years old born Canada, the 1871 census
finds her aged 19, born Canada, but the 1881 Census finds her aged 29 born Canada West. I was led
by a knowledgeable Lister in the British Columbia List to hunt for this birth in Ontario.

What are my chances of being able to find a record of this birth somewhere in Ontario ? This family
missed the 1851census in Canada. I am looking for Margaret's marriage or death registrations in
Scotland, either of which should give her parents. I can also perhaps find the death registration
of Jane, if Margaret is noted as her daugher, perhaps as the Informant, I've got something to begin
with. There is the possibility the father, William died in Ontario, causing the wife, Jane to
head back home to Orkney in late 1853 probably with an infant in tow.
