My family story says that my ancestor left the farm in Hastings county in
the the summer of 1877 and moved to Minnesota. His family went by boat from
Belleville to Port Huron, and then by train to Minnesota.

1. Was that possible? Was the Welland canal in operation then?. Was there
another way from Belleville to Port Huron that involved a boat for at least
a part of the trip?

2. Assuming that they did indeed travel on a boat in Lake Erie, why would
they bypass the ports of Toledo and Detroit to go on to Port Huron before
they switched to a U.S. train?
