Dear Lorine:
I am in possession of a genealogy work by Arthur Kelly on Palatine
families in New York, including ours. He does do research on the
Palatines in New York, both generally and for personal commission. He
also probably knows more about the vital records of parts of New York
than anyone else does. Any study of our Loyalist ancestors in Canada in
most cases also must include a study of the Palatines in New York. I have
simply been trying to find out how much credibility to attach to this work of
his. I was also led to believe that he knew Henry Jones, and picked up
some of these families where Henry Jones' work left off. The work Arthur
Kelly has done on some families, ours in particular, is at serious odds with
some of Jones work. Before I post a correction to Jones work, I was
trying to be certain of the credibility of Arthur Kelly's work. I personally
believe the Kelly conclusions are the correct ones. Apparently I have
offended you by this line of questioning, and for that I apologize.
One last thing....I realize that Henry Jones work seems to be the Holy
Grail for genealogists researching the Palatines. It is a great work. None
better yet exists, and maybe never will. It does, however, contain
mistakes. As more people join the search for their roots, more mistakes
will come to light. I'm shocked by the attitude that if it's in Jones, that's the
last word on the subject. It isn't.
