Hello,
I've been researching my familys history in England. Going along nicely
till this little mystery popped up in the British 1881 census.
Dwelling: 7 Elm Grove
Census Place: Brighton, Sussex, England
Source: FHL Film 1341255 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 1084 Folio 93 Page 6
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Thos. SOUTHGATE M 40 M Norwich, Norfolk, England
Rel: Head
Occ: Labourer Iron Foundry
Annie SOUTHGATE M 36 F Dorking, Surrey, England
Rel: Wife
Maud SOUTHGATE 11 F Canada
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
How or why would a labourer and his family go to Canada to give birth
of their daughter Maud, and then return home. That obviously make no
sense. So I'm now thinking that perhaps she was an orphan, maybe from a
brother or sister of Thomas or Annie. Anyone have any ideas on how I
would find her birth? As I said, I've beeen looking into English census
records etc. What is available for Canadian Births and baptisms in 1870.
Thank You
Dennis Southgate
