Subject: SINNETT, Francis, French origin, 1801-1879

I have found 1871 census records for my ancestor Francis SINNETT (1801-1879)
in Charlotte Co., New Brunswick. His sons and daughters are in the area and
appear on the same census. For origin each has French. For birth place,
each has NB, except for Francis, who has Canada. On one of the son's records
for origin first was written Upper Canada, but that was crossed out and
replaced with French.

Francis SINNETT's grave record reads Francis ZENETTE, and his age is given as
96 in 1879. The 1871 census indicates that he is 70 years old.

There is a Francois SENET born near Montreal and christened in 1801, who
would fit the man of the census, but the grave record casts doubt on his year
of birth.

Since there was reference to Upper Canada in one of his sons' census entry,
where should I begin looking for people of French origin in Upper Canada?
Was migration to New Brunswick a common thing then? I believe he was in New
Brunswick by 1825, for all his children were born in New Brunswick. Should I
take the designation Upper Canada in this case too literally?

Thank you for any help.
