Elizabeth, we do have a document proving that a Union patrol out of
Clarksville camped one night at the Andrew BROWN plantation on Yellow Creek.
There was a mill there called Brown Mill. It later became known as Ellis
Mills. The area is now in Houston County.

This encampment occurred following a skirmish between Southern Guerillas and
Union forces at a place called the Irish Shanty located near the current site
of Tennessee City. One point of confusion is I recall a place on an old Civil
War Map called Gilliam Station which was near the the Irish Shanty but I don't
think it was on Yellow Creek.

The encampment at BROWN's planation occurred on the trip "back" to Clarksville
following the skirmish and taking prisoners. Dr. Cal James who is writing a
book on the epidsode has suggested the Union forces camped someplace along
Yellow Creek on their way down to the Shanty.

Any evidence you might have of the encampment or it's specific location would
be appreciated.

Russ James of Houston Co. TN
