MESSAGE: (#536) Raccoon Creek John DICKSON
<http://www.tngenweb.org/dickson/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?rev=536>
AUTHOR: Russell James
DATE: Friday, 12 November 2004, at 7:42 a.m.
On 6 January 1823 the sale of the estate of John DICKSON was filed by his
administrators (Robert DICKSON, Hugh DICKSON, & Joseph DICKSON) in Dickson
Co., TN (Source: Estate Settlement Book, Dickson Co. Archives). There are
multiple entries in the Dickson Co. Court Minutes in the years following
showing evidence of conflict between the widow and the children in resolving
the estate. The sale of the John DICKSON plantation finally occurs ca. 1828
naming heirs and the purchaser was Joseph KIMBLE.
From various records I believe the family consisted of:
Wife: Mary/Polly (maiden name unknown)
Children: Robert DICKSON (probably married Peggy MORRISON a dau. of William
MORRISON), Hugh DICKSON, Joseph DICKSON, John DICKSON, Jr. James W. DICKSON,
Adam DICKSON (may have married Cecilia NOLAN and then a LEWIS), Jane DICKSON
(m. Tharp R. ESTES), Polly Lundy/Linda DICKSON. perhaps unknown daughter who
married James BOATRIGHT, perhaps unknown daughter who married Benjamin
CUMMINS.
Other names that appear associated wtih this family in Dickson Co. TN are:
Adam WILSON, Joseph WILSON, John WILSON, the George WEST family, Lucy
ANDERSON, Allen ANDERSON, Levi ANDERSON, William ANDERSON, Chauncy DAVENPORT,
Alexander DICKSON, Hugh DICKSON, Sr., Hewel PARRISH, Margaret COWAN, James
GOODRICH, the HANDLIN family, Joseph KIMBLE, William MORRISON, John STEWART,
the TURNER family and others.
I identify this John DICKSON as "Raccoon Creek John DICKSON" because of the
creek being mentioned in his deeds. His land also was along the main stream of
the area...Yellow Creek.
The son, Robert DICKSON, should not be confused with the Robert DICKSON who
was the son of Capt. Joseph DICKSON who died ca. 1803 in Dickson Co.
The son, Hugh DICKSON, should not be confused with the Hugh DICKSON who was
the son of Capt. Joseph DICKSON who died ca. 1803 in Dickson Co. nor with Dry
Branch Hugh DICKSON (frequently called Hugh DICKSON, Sr.) who lived nearby.
The son, Joseph DICKSON, should not be confused with the Joseph DICKSON who
was the son of Capt. Joseph DICKSON who died ca. 1803 in Dickson Co.
The fact is that several given names are repeated again and again in 5
different DICKSON families who settled in the area.
My theory is that Raccon Creek John DICKSON, Dry Branch Hugh DICKSON, Bear
Creek James DICKSON (moved on to Perry Co.) and Bartons Creek Joseph DICKSON
(Montgomery Co. TN) were brothers and probably nephews of Captain Joseph
DICKSON who died in Dickson Co. TN ca. 1803.
I believe they came to Dickson Co. from Greene Co. TN and/or Jefferson Co. TN.
I think the family was closely aligned with the WILSON, WOODS, STEWART and
COWAN families who came from the same area.
There is also some evidence there were several sisters. A couple may have
married WOODS bothers and perhaps one or more married into the WILSON family
(the latter just a guess). I suspect one was named Hannah DICKSON and she
married her cousin Hugh DICKSON (s/o Capt. Joseph DICKSON) and they moved to
Franklin Co. AL. Everybody shows her name as Hannah HICKS but two different
original records say it was DICKSON.
If you are interested in the DICKSON or related families of upper middle TN
our DICKSON family research team could really use some help!
