MESSAGE: (#493) DICKSON Family/County Bombshell..more
<http://www.tngenweb.org/dickson/webbbs/queries/index.cgi?rev=493>;
AUTHOR: Russell James
DATE: Friday, 25 June 2004, at 9:03 a.m.

I recently set forth the theory on this forum that Dr. Wiliam DICKSON, Jr. of
Davidson Co. TN (and the person for whom Dickson Co. TN is said to be named)
was "not" the son of Col. William DICKSON of Duplin Co. NC as generally
accepted and published. But rather, he was the son of James DICKSON, Sr. of
Duplin Co. NC.

That theory was based on the following:

Dickson Co. Deed Book A, pg. 329

James DICKSON of Duplin Co. NC conveys to William DICKSON, JR. a "resident of
TN" in consideration of "my love and affection for my son", 640 acres on Jones
Creek in Dickson Co. TN. The said tract was below the Chickasaw Trace and the
adjacent lands of Jason THOMSON & John LARKINS are mentioned in the
description. Witnesses: Edward PEARSALL, Molton DICKSON., Dated 26 April 1808.
Recorded 1810.

But was that William DICKSON, Jr., "resident of TN", the William DICKSON from
"Davidson Co." TN? I kept looking for the sale of this land "after" 1808 with
no luck but then I discovered:

Dickson Co. Deed Book A, pg. 196

William DICKSON, Jr. of "Davidson Co." TN to Mathew McCLURKEN of Dickson Co.
TN for the consideration of $500 conveys a tract of land containing 640 acres
on both sides of Jones Creek in Dickson Co. It is below the Chickasaw Trace.
It was a grant originally given to James DICKSON of Duplin Co. NC. Witnesses:
Jason THOMPSON, John LARKINS. Dated 4 Nov. 1807. Recorded 1808

The dates are bothersome. How can he sell the land before his title to it? I
"think" I have seen a Power of Attorney from James DICKSON, Sr. of Duplin Co.
NC to Dr. William DICKSON, Jr. of Davidson Co. TN in the Deed book of
Montgomery Co. before Dickson Co. was formed. At the time I thought it was
Uncle to Nephew. Now I think it was Father to Son.

It is so widely accepted that Dr. William DICKSON, Jr. of Davidson Co. (and
the person for whom Dickson Co. is said to be named) was the son of Col.
William DICKSON of Duplin Co. NC that I still have some doubts about my own
discovery.

If anyone has some type of proof contrary to this new discovery...please
advise. If the theory proves true, a number of DICKSON family history and
Dickson County history books need to be amended!

I would like to exchange information with Upper Middle Tennessee Researchers
in regards to several DICKSON lines here. I have easy access to the records in
Houston, Montgomery, Dickson, Humphreys and Stewart Counties and my current
project is to sort out all the DICKSON families n this area ca. 1800-1850. A
project only a few weeks old that will probably last a couple of years.

Russ James of Houston Co. TN
