Subject: Applications of James Johnston

Following are my Notes on what Nancy Sent on James Johnston Rev. War. Application

In James Johnstons first application I gleaned the following

Dr. Robertson due him before and after he became crippled

He testified several times on petitions::" I have often been invited by several of the leadin carracters of my state to call on the Legislature of Va for a pensions as all other wounded men had done"

He served with George Hannah an Old Brother soldier that was with him when he was wounded.

Col. Sam Veneable formerly of Prince Edward County Virgina knew James Johnston?????

James Boulden prepared his petition::

Who is George Hannah and where did he live and die at. Did he apply for a pension as he is alive in 1826

Col. Sam Venable of Prince Edward Co:::: how would James Johnston know him::: what can be found on this Colonel Sam or Samuel Veneable.

Who is James Boulden and why was he chosed to fill out James Johnstons application

Next Letter from George Hannah

James Johnston sent a letter to George Hannah::: again who and where did George Hannah live and die at.

George served in the 7th Virignia Regiment of Infantry::: where was this formed from, & who was its Officers.

They were both transferred to General Washington Life Guards

George Hannah was in the Battle which caused Cornwallice to surrender This battle is where James Johnston was wounded.

George Hannah was a favorite friend of James Johnston who stayed with him after being wounded. They spent about 10 days in the Battle area and left to Richmond where they were meet by James Johnstons father with a carriage??? Someone went ahead and knew where to get ahold of his father and made these arraingements.

George Hannah "Thou I have seen him but seldom since for we went to different parts of the Country to Live. "

Dr. Robertson actual saw James Johnston on his way to the Battle to Kecth Cornwallice and he knew him to be healthy before the Battle.Note they seem to know each other on a personnal bases. Where did John Robertson Live in 1826 and during the Battle of 1781 ( year Cornwallice surrended) Also this is time when James Johnston left from resting at his Father and mothers House.

Dr. Robertson has seen him drag his leg ever since that Battle::

2nd Petition of James Johnston in 1835

Identifies that James Johnston is a Virginian born and raised.

He left for War on Nov 15 1776 ( last time he saw his father and mother)

May 3rd 1777 HE is leaves the 14 Va Regiment and is assigned to General George Washingtons Life Guards. H.Q. is at Middle Brook New Jersey. He stayed with Washington Life Guards in 1777,1778, and 1779.

James Johnston arrived in General Washingtons Life Guards the same week General Lafayette does.

James Johnston next service is under an Officer names Colefax, where he becomes a Sgt. In the Virginia Line of Cavalary.

James Johnston takes a furlough in 1781 and was at the "Courthouse in Prince Edward County" "was on my way on furlough from the North there" when he hears of the pending battle at Guilford NC" Then instead of going and staying two months with my father and mother that I had not seen since 15 Nov. 1776.He then rounds up 12 Old Colonial soldiers that had served 3 years to the North under General Washington, these he states are very well Trained.

James Johnston and the 12 Old soldiers go to Guilford Courthouse he reports straight to General Greene with the 12 Soldiers. ( interesting statement here) With in Two hours General Greene has placed these men as Adjutants to his Officers

James Johnston is adjutant to Col. Mumford and the Majors in this unit are Skipworth and Hubbard.

"Now as soon as CornWallice was gone Green was obliged to discharge us or else we should all perish for a number of soldiers would faint and fall on the Road for want of Provision. Then I returned back to stay a few days with my Father and mother, then in Charlotte CO. Virginia"

While at his parents he hears that Arnold and Phillips are ravaging Virgina and Lafayette, so he leaves and finds General Lafayette, at Yorktown where they are trying to hold Cornwallice, When General Washington arrives he is face to face with Washington. (WOW) James Johnston goes with General Lafayette and on their charge is when he takes a bullet in the knee.

He is placed in a hospital and someone stole his knapsack:

He states there was another James Johnson in the Virginia Cav. With him.
