Well, there are two sides to that story. In Texas a rancher/farmer is required
to fence in a cemetery if it is land-locked. However this sometimes presents a big
problem for the rancher/farmer as he is not required to keep it mowed down, etc. (nor
should he be if it is not his family's cemetery)---therefore it becomes a haven for
snakes and other critters which can be a potential danger to his cattle---especially
the calves. As expensive as cattle are you can see why he might not be so open to
maintaining a fence in such a situation. In many situations he cannot find family
members who are willing to keep the tall grass and weeds from growing up. It should
not be the place of someone who bought land some 50 years or more after a cemetery
has been established to maintain that cemetery.
That is why it is so important for family members to form cemetery associations
to not only maintain the cemetery but to keep someone from allowing their cattle in
among the stones as their dainty little feet can really destroy a cemetery in a
hurry! Then too, most cemeteries are among trees and cattle just love to sit among
the stones where it is shady and cool and lean on them!

Betty Collier - I am told in some states that the landowner must fence a graveyard
before he allows cattle or any type of livestock to roam through the cemetery. You
may want to check to see if this is true in Tn. and maybe you can get the problem
solved. GOOD LUCK. YOU WOULD THINK PEOPLE WOULD BE MORE CONSIDERATE.

By the way did you get to the Linzy graveyard at the end of Slater Rd? not much left
after that clown placed feeders in the tree grove.
