Subject: [TNDICKSO] Marriage bonds
Date: Sat, 1 Jan 2000 13:58:10 EST
Been doing some more researching:
According to friend and teacher, Bill Thompson (CG):
"Marriage bonds did not require marriage, and no penalty was imposed for cold
feet or cooled hearts"
Helpful hints concerning marriage information:
1. Concerning a marriage bond date, it was the date the bond was filed. (The
marriage may take place days to weeks later.) Anglican church members did not
marry during lent or advent.
2. Many early marriages failed to comply with the law or were not
registered. These are still considered morally valid and generally accepted
as legitimate. People followed their own customs, married as they pleased,
regardless of the law. Normally, these marriages are not found in the public
records.
3. Marriage license only gave permission to marry, it was the marriage
certificate/ minister's return that actually proved that the marriage took
place.
4. Ministers may have taken up to a year to return the marriage return. In
many cases marriages are filed by the date of the minister's return and not
the date of marriage.
5. Remember that in some cases, marriages are recorded in court minutes,
deed books and estate records; don't discount any legal documents as leads or
clues.
Hope this helps,
Suzanne
