BURDEN, JESS WIGGINS - 88, born April 5, 1917, passed away November 22, 2005.
Preceded in death by son, John Clark Burden. Graduate of Berea College, Ky.
1941 with a BS degree in Physics, Chemistry and Math. He worked on the
Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tenn. from 1942-1945. He completed the remainder of
his career in Health Physics at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge
with retirement in 1975. Survived by wife, Leona Burden, Rockport, TX; son and
wife, Earl and Linda Burden, Tulsa, Okla.; daughter, Shirley Burden McLaughlin,
Ashville, NC; daughter, Mary Joyce Burden VanWechel and husband, Steve,
Portland, Ore; and daughter, Jane Burden Krueger and husband, Darryl, Greenville,
SC; grandchildren, Christopher Burden, Rockport, Monica Burden Burgin,
Birmingham, Ala, Joseph, Makayla & Jessica VanWechel, Portland, Ore., Deanna Green
Hopkins, Greenville, SC; great grandchildren, Ash and Kai Burden, Rockport, TX,
John Blake Burgin, Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Burden and his wife, Leona recently
moved to Rockport, TX to live with his grandson, Chris & Tonia Burden. Previously
they lived in the Claxton Community for 60 years during which their lives were
enriched by their many wonderful neighbors, friends in the Knoxville area and
professional colleagues in Oak Ridge. Mr. Burden will be sadly missed by all
who knew him. The family will receive friends Saturday November 26th from 1-3
p.m. at the Woodhaven Mortuary, Edgemoore Rd., with funeral service at 3 p.m.
Burial following in the adjacent Tennessee Valley Memorial Cemetery.
BURNEY, JUNIOR HAWKINS - age 82, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away
Thursday, November 24, 2005 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. He was
born December 2, 1922 in Robertson County, Tennessee. The Burney's moved to
Oliver Springs in 1944. Mr. Burney was Mayor of Oliver Springs from 1967-1971,
serving two terms, during the two major floods that hit this area in 1967. He
was instrumental in flood control and fire protection improvements, in Oliver
Springs. In addition, he was very active in serving the Oliver Springs and
Blair Volunteer Fire Departments. He was a retired Captain of the K-25 Fire
Department, with 40 years of service. Mr. Burney attended Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church
when able and loved gospel singing. He was an avid UT Vol fan, especially the
Lady Vols. He also enjoyed fishing and car racing. He was loved and respected
by his family and friends. Preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth
Jackson Burney; father, Frank Albert Wyatt Burney; mother, Sarah E. James;
brothers, James Burney and William Robert Burney; sister, Maxine Parker. In his
early years, he was loved and cared for by his grandmother, Izzie Dora Burney.
Survivors: sons, Donnie W. Burney & wife, Linda of Oliver Springs, Stanley R.
Burney & wife, Sandy of Harriman, Troy A. Burney & wife, Annette of Oliver
Springs, Roy F. Burney & wife, Patsy of Oliver Springs; grandsons, Ray Burney &
wife, Melissa, Greg Burney & wife, Diana, William Burney, Scott Burney;
granddaughters, Melody Kerley & husband, Randy, Cindy Murphy & husband, Ronnie; great
grandchildren Beth & Luke Murphy, Nicholas & Zachary Burney, Jamie & Jacob
Kerley, Travis & Morgan Burney; sister, Betty Morris & husband, Dean of Guthrie,
Kentucky; sisters-in-law,Louise Burney, Billie Jean Burney, Vivian Hale, Wilma
Beasley, Maggie McHugh and Marie Jackson; special friends, Mark & Regina
Silvey, Wayne & Ruann Wolum; a host of nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Dr.
Wells & staff of the Roane County Dialysis Center and all the nurses at the
Methodist Medical Center, 2nd floor West, for all their special care. The family
will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm, Sunday, November 27, 2005 at the Sharp
Funeral Home with funeral service following at 8:00 pm, in the chapel with Rev.
Keith Price, Rev. Tommy Hensley and Rev. Wayne Morgan officiating. Burial and
graveside service will be held 11:00 am, Monday, November 28, 2005 at Mt.
Pisgah Cemetery. Sharp Funeral Home of Oliver Springs is in charge of all the
arrangements.
HARVEY, VIRGINIA WESTMORELAND - 75, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, November 25,
2005 at NHC Health Care Center. She was born April 28, 1930 in Smith County.
Mrs. Harvey and her husband, Thomas were married on February 1, 1948 and moved
to Oak Ridge in 1952. Rather than look for a paying job, she chose the most
important job of all, that of turning their little apartment into a loving home
for her family. She made many friends while living in Oak Ridge. A sizeable
number of them were only temporary residents from around the country. Others were
from other countries, but most were permanent residents of Oak Ridge. Without
trying to name all of them, the family wishes to thank each and every one of
them for just being her friend. Mrs. Harvey was preceded in death by her
father, her mother, Addie and brothers, David and Ralph. She is survived by her
husband of 57 years, Thomas Harvey; daughter, Brenda Owens and her husband Timmy
of Lebanon; son, Robert Harvey and his wife Robin of Oak Ridge; grandson, Scot
Owens and his wife Skylyn of Mt. Juliet; granddaughters, Paige Harvey of Oak
Ridge andJill Owens of Lebanon; sisters, Betty Johnson and Linda Hopkins of
Lebanon; brothers, Charles Westmoreland and Billy Joe Bowen of Algood and
several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 27,
2005 at 2:00 pm (CST) at Wilson County Memorial Gardens in Lebanon with Stan
Stevenson officiating. The family asks that any memorials be in the form of
contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place,
Memphis, TN 38105-1942. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 3:00 -
5:00pm (EST) at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge. An on-line guest book can be

JUDD, CONNIE LYNN - age 45, a resident of the Dyllis community of Roane
County, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at her home. She was born October
13, 1960 in Walla-Walla, Washington, living in Oliver Springs since 1992.
Connie had worked for the past 13 years at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville as a
Respiratory Therapist. Preceded in death by her father, Glenn Fisher.
Survivors: daughters, Emma Aileen Judd of Dyllis, Sarah Elaine Judd of Dyllis;
mother, Drusilla Moler of Saybrook, Illinois; brothers, Steven Fisher of Saybrook,
Illinois, Colin Fisher of Pickmeyville, Michigan; sisters, Christy Fisher of
Saybrook, Illinois, Cindy Ratt of Saybrook, Illinois; former husband, Charles
Judd of Oliver Springs. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 7:00 pm,
Saturday, November 26, 2005 at Sharp Funeral Home with memorial service following at
7:00 pm, in the chapel with Richard Powlus officiating. Sharp Funeral Home of
Oliver Springs is in charge of all the arrangements.
SMITHERS, SHIRLEY WANDA - age 82 born January 27, 1923 in Scott County,
passed away at NHC Thursday November 24, 2005. Member of First Baptist Church
Fountain City. Preceded in death by parents John J. & Hazel H. Smithers, sister
Colleen S. Byrd. Survivors: Francois (Fran) Roberts, Lois Underwood of Knoxville;
brother, John E. Smithers of Lafollette, several nieces & nephews. Family &
friends will meet 1:45 pm Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery for graveside service
at 2 pm. Rev. Maston Jackson officiating. Mynatt Funeral Home Fountain City in
charge.
WILSON, RUBY - age 87 of the Cumberland View Community in Jacksboro, Tn.
passed away Wednesday November 23, 2005 at the St Mary's Medical Center of
Campbell County. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Cumberland View Baptist Church and was a
substitute teacher for the Campbell County School System for over 40 years.
Preceded in death by husband: Fred Wilson; parents: Pleas and Annie Grissom
Hatmaker; daughter in law: Ruth Wilson. Survived by children: Rev. Bobby Ray
Wilson and wife: Rose Lynn. Louise Wood and husband: John, Jim Wilson & wife:
Janice, all of Jacksboro; grandchildren: LeAnne Wilson & Brandi Tiller both of
Knoxville, and Eric Wilson of Jacksboro; great grandchildren: Chelsey Tiller and
Alyssa Wilson; sister: Bernice Richardson of Jacksboro; several nieces and
nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 3 PM
Sunday at Cumberland View Baptist Church with Rev. Hobert McCreary and Rev.
Jimmy Ault officiating. Interment will follow in Cumberland View Cemetery. The
family will receive friends from 1 until 3 PM before funeral services at
Cumberland View Baptist Church. Martin Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.
