Margaret H. Baker, 81, of Knoxville and formerly of Oak Ridge, died Saturday,
Sept. 3, 2005, at NHC HealthCare at Fort Sanders.
Mrs. Baker was born Nov. 26, 1923 in Sheffield, Ala., the daughter of Willie
R. and Annie Neil Harlow.
Margaret moved to Oak Ridge in 1947 from Miami, Fla., and went to work at the
Oak Ridge Hospital as a nurse. She was one of the four nurses to open the
first cardiac care unit at the hospital. Margaret met Cova Baker in 1947 and they
were married in 1948 at the United Church Chapel on the Hill. A veteran of
World War II who served in the Army Corps of Nursing, Mrs. Baker enjoyed sewing,
needlework and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her husband,
Cova Baker; and by two brothers, Bill and Neil Harlow. Survivors include her
two daughters, Covalyn Giles and her husband Dan of Knoxville, and Bonny
Pendleton and her husband Thomas of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Seth Carden of
Knoxville, Maggie Carden of Knoxville, Philip Knight and his wife Michel of
Knoxville, and Sara Cunha and her husband Jose of Omaha, Neb.; two
great-grandchildren, Lauren Knight of Knoxville and Leilani Carden of Knoxville; and special
friend and caregiver, Mary Ann Swafford of Knoxville.
The funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, in the chapel of
Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the grandchildren giving eulogies.
A graveside service and burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at
Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home.

Beatrice Roberts Byrd, formerly of 214 Walter Stevens Rd. in Hampton, Tenn.,
died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, in Oak Ridge.
The daughter of Sallie Ann Waycaster and Samuel Wesley Roberts, she was a
homemaker and a member of Oak Hill Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blake
G. Byrd, Sr.; two infant daughters; her stepmother, Amanda Byrd Roberts; and
two brothers, Timothy and Paul Roberts.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and David Horton
of Lawton, Okla., Esther and John Halliwell of Oak Ridge, and Sally and Gene
Thomason of Watauga, Tenn.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mike and Nina
Joe Byrd of Smyrna, Ga., Robert and Judy Byrd of Asheville, N.C. and Blake Byrd
Jr., of Knoxville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; several
nieces and nephews; a foster brother, Clifford Berry; and special friends,
Gladys Collins, Tim Miller and Fred Ellis, and her caregivers at Continuum
Courtyards in Oak Ridge.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at Memorial
Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tenn., with the Rev. Steve Burleson officiating.
Burial followed in the Oak Hill Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton,
Tenn.

Larcea "Pete" Clark, 66, of Marietta, Ga., died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at
Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
He was born Jan. 5, 1939, in Ruleville, Miss.
Mr. Clark had worked at Rapid Cab as a cabdriver, was a member of Mt. Zion
Missionary Baptist Church, and had once been active with the Boys Club of Oak
Ridge.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carlora Clark.
Survivors include his mother, Leonora Tillman of Oak Ridge, his former wife,
Betty Doris Clark; two sons, Tom Purnell of Florida, and James Clements of
Cobb County, Ga.; seven daughters, Stephanie Clark and Darlene Clark, both of
Atlanta, Carsetti D. Clark of Cobb County, Ga., Jacqueline Wade of Minnesota,
Lynn Reed of Columbus, Ohio, Marciael Owens of Cobb County, Ga., and Debrah Ann
Holmes of Oak Ridge; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, in the chapel of
Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Lloyd Jones officiating. The burial will
be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the
mortuary.

Nita Dave, 44, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2005 at her home.
Nita was born Jan. 14, 1961, in Kitale Kenya, East Africa, to Hematram B. and
Jamkuben H. Vyas Mehta.
Nita and her husband, Ashwin, moved to Oak Ridge six years ago from Georgia
where she had been employed as a pharmacist technician. She enjoyed meeting
people and making friends, singing, helping with charities, and spending time
with her family. Education was very important to Nita and she stressed that to
her children, encouraging them to make plans to continue their education in
college.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Nita is survived by her husband, Ashwin M. Dave; her two children, Rushil and
Roshni, all of Oak Ridge; six brothers, Atmaram H. Mehta and his wife
Dayaben, Prabhuram H. Mehta and his wife Veenaben, Baburam H. Mehta and his wife
Sarlaben, Jestaram H. Mehta and his wife Vilashben, Ashvin H. Mehta and his wife
Hiraben and Mukesh H. Mehta and his wife Vaani; two sisters, Champben R. Vyas,
and Madhubala B. Vyas and her husband Bhupendra.
The funeral was held Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, in the chapel of Martin Oak
Ridge Funeral Home.

Renee Mabel Harness, 79, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005.
Mrs. Harness was born April 13, 1926, in Cardiff, South Wales, to parents
Elsie Mary Briggs and William Frank Briggs.
Mrs. Harness retired from Union Carbide where she was employed as a
secretary. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and an active member of
Daughters of the King. She was a loving mother and grandmother who was an avid
reader, gardener, and enjoyed all things British, especially tea parties.
Her husband, Elijah Frost Harness, her brother, Don Briggs of Cardiff, Wales,
and her grandsons Donnie and Bobby Mihalczo preceded Mrs. Harness in death.
Survivors include her sister, Dori Handell of Dorset, Dorchester, South
Wales; daughter, Margaret Mihalczo and husband, John of Oak Ridge; her son, Ray
Harness and wife, Melinda and grandson, Kimball of Georgia; John T., JoAnn,
David, and Paul Mihalczo, and numerous other family members and friends.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at St. Stephen's
Episcopal Church followed by a graveside service at Laurel Grove Community
Church cemetery.

Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 212 North Tulane

Kimberly Anne McCasland Hopper Puciloski, 41, of Knoxville, died Friday,
Sept. 2, 2005, as the result of an automobile accident. She studied with a local
rabbi and considered herself a Christian Jew. She retired with 20 years of
service as a microbiologist and environmental scientist in Oak Ridge.
She has now joined her father, Kenneth McCasland; and grandparents, Kenneth
and Frances McCasland and Chloretta and Paul M. Brown, in heaven.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Stephanie Sharon Hopper; fiance,
William Bivens; mother, Nancy B. McCasland; sister, Lisa Kay McCasland McGregor;
brothers, Donald B. McCasland, Isa Kevin Douglas McCasland; aunts and uncles,
Kay and Charlie Harrop, Paul V. Brown, Anne (for whom she was named) and Bob
Hunt; nieces and nephew, Kaylie, Ariel, Fiona and Aaron; cousins, Cindy, Scott,
Greg, Heather, Angela, Scott and Molly.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at the Berry
Funeral Home Chapel.

Bennie Ross Smith, 82, of Oneida, formerly of Oak Ridge, departed this life
Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at the Scott County Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1922, in Robbins, Tenn., he was the son of Benjamin Smith and
Nancy Ross Smith.
Mr. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church in Robbins, a veteran of
World War II, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5669 in Oneida,
and was a 55-year member of South Gate Masonic Lodge No. 569 in Harriman.
Bennie was the owner of Townsite Barber Shop in Oak Ridge for several years,
was a licensed ham radio operator, and an avid fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Rachel
Carter Smith and Mary Ellen Crawford Smith; a brother, Lonnie Lee Smith and his
wife Ora; and by a brother-in-law, Lonnie Raines.
Mr. Smith is survived by a brother, James Alton Smith and wife Doris of
Huntsvillle, Ala.; sisters, Frances Raines of Robbins, Tenn., Minnie Lou Jeffers
and husband Floyd of Huntsville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, June Palmateer of
Portage, Ind.; nieces and nephews, Nancy Burke of Oneida, Sandra Jo Young of Robbins,
Barbara Ritchie of Robbins, Wanda Barnes of Knoxville, Larry Raines of
Lakeland, Fla., Jim Smith of Huntsville, Ala., Marquita Karriker of Bella Vista,
Ark., Melinda Smith of Huntsville, Ala., and Derita Manzanares of Ypsilanti,
Mich. He also leaves many other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, in the chapel of
West-Murley Funeral Home in Oneida.
The graveside service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Tennessee
Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville.

William "Bill" Lowell Wallace Sr., 68, of Andersonville, died Saturday, Sept.
3, 2005, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Bill was a member of First Baptist Church in Andersonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mirma and Myrtle Foust Wallace.
Mr. Wallace is survived by his wife, Edna Disney Wallace of Andersonville;
son, William Wallace Jr. and wife Jennifer of Old Hickory; two daughters,
Elizabeth Grace Wallace and Connie Jo Wallace, both of Andersonville; three
grandchildren, Caleb, Lillian, and Joel Wallace of Old Hickory; four brothers, Ray
Wallace and wife Martha of Paducah, Ky., Joe Wallace and wife Kathleen of
Andersonville, James Wallace and wife Barbara of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kenneth "Reece"
Wallace and wife Christine of Heiskell; five sisters, Anna Lou Schuster of
LaPorte, Ind., Dorothy Beck of Grand Junction, Colo., Barbara Border and husband
Paul of Scottsboro, Ala., Mary Thomas of Knoxville, and Jane Lowery and husband
Maynard of Andersonville; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends whom he
loved deeply.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, at First
Baptist Church in Andersonville with the Rev. Steve Lakin and the Rev. Terry Moore
officiating. Mr. Wallace's body may be viewed one hour prior to the funeral at
the church.
The graveside will follow the funeral at Andersonville Cemetery. Honorary
Pallbearers will be the Men's Sr. Adult Sunday School Class at First Baptist
Church and his co-workers at X-10/ORNL.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home.
