William George "Bill" Wheat, 83, of Las Cruces, N.M., died peacefully in his
sleep Thursday, May 5, 2005, at his home. He was born July 31, 1921, in Van
Horn, Texas, to Luther P. and Elizabeth Wellborn Wheat. Mr. Wheat graduated from
Van Horn High School and attended Texas Western School of Mines in El Paso,
Texas, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1942. As a member of the 93rd
Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force stationed in England, he flew 30 missions in
B24 Liberators over Europe. One of his most vivid memories of the war was
flying over the English Channel on June 5, 1944, his next-to-last mission, seeing
the Allied Invasion Forces gathering in the Channel for the landing the next
day. Among other honors, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air
Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He
completed the service as an instructor of engine mechanics at Keesler Air Field in
Biloxi, Miss. Mr. Wheat married Sara "Sally" Niblack in Tyler, Texas, on Sept.
30, 1944, and settled in Van Horn, Texas, where he managed the family
business, the Van Horn Hardware and Lumber Company, until his retirement in l981. He
was active in civic affairs and was a member of the Van Horn Methodist Church.
According to his family, Mr. Wheat could build or fix anything and, with
meticulous care, help someone else do the same. He had the only hardware store
within a hundred miles of farming, ranching and mining country and was willing day
or night to provide whatever was needed. His family depended on him and by
example, they said, he taught all of us the right way to live and go on without
him. He was an outdoorsman who loved the beautiful West Texas country where he
lived. Bill and Sally moved to Las Cruces, N.M. in 1991. His photographs of
West Texas and New Mexico wildlife and scenery are of professional quality. He
had many friends with whom he played golf, went fishing and exchanged jokes
and funny stories. His quiet, dry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew
him. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Earle Wheat,
Joe Ben Wheat and Luther Peers Wheat. Survivors include his wife of 60 years,
Sally Wheat of the family home; two daughters, Cathy Kamat and husband,
Satish, of Las Cruces, and Jeanie Gregory and husband, Don, of Oak Ridge. He also
leaves his grandchildren, Sharad Kamat Stump and husband, Tod, of Brentwood,
Tenn., Anil Kamat of Santa Fe, N.M., Eric Gregory and wife, Jamie, of St. Louis,
Mo., and Lauren Gregory of Columbia, S.C.; and great-grandchildren, Seth and
Kiran Stump. At Mr. Wheat's request, there will be no public services. A family
memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to
remember Mr. Wheat should contribute to a charity of the donor's choice. Baca's
Funeral Chapels and Baca's Mimbres Crematory in Las Cruces, N.M., is in
charge of arrangements.

Roger C. Begley, 55, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at the
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of the
arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.
