Arthur Julian Avila, 87,
Barbara Mary Riddell Compton, 74,
Arthur Julian Avila, 87, a chemical and metallurgical engineer who held four
patents in ultrasonic welding and pulse-plating technology, died Saturday,
April 30, 2005, of cancer. Mr. Avila recently moved to Tennessee to be near
family. He was born to Michael Avila and Caroline Bauman Avila on July 9, 1917, and
was raised in Hoboken, N.J. Mr. Avila was a graduate of the A.J. Demarest
High School in the class of 1935. He worked as an engineer for Western Electric
and earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from New York
University in 1946, and a Master of Science degree in metallurgy from Stevens
Institute of Technology in 1952. He was one of the engineers who initially staffed the
Western Electric Engineering Research Center in Princeton, N.J. in 1958. He
was a research leader there in metallurgical studies. During his 28 years with
Western Electric, he worked at facilities in New Jersey and Illinois. After
retiring, he formed his own consulting company, Avila Engineering. He published
a book, Production Pulse Plating, in 1983, and numerous articles in technical
publications. He was a member of the American Society for Metals, the American
Electroplaters Society and the American Welding Society. Active in volunteer
activities, Mr. Avila helped form the Medical Engineering Club at Western
Electric, where he was instrumental in setting up a group that typed books in
Braille, working in conjunction with Recording for the Blind of Princeton. He was
also a longtime coach of Pony League baseball in Naperville, Ill. Mr. Avila
was preceded in death by three siblings, Michael, Alfred and Anna. He is
survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Noreen (DeMartino); and four children and
their spouses, Susan and Allen Ekkebus of Oak Ridge, Philip and Yolanda Avila of
Rahway, N.J., Stephen and Delores Avila of Arlington, Va., and John and Patty
Avila of Glenview, Ill. His grandchildren include Cheryl and Kevin Ekkebus,
Michelle and Timothy Avila, Bryanna Williams, Zachary, Sarah and Grace Avila; and
he has one great-grandchild, Angel Avila. Mr. Avila is also survived by two
brothers, Robert and Edward; and two sisters, Margaret and Caroline. A funeral
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005, at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. John Appiah officiating. His burial will
follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the
Ekkebus residence, 129 Montana Ave. in Oak Ridge, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 6.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 871
Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909. Cremation Options Inc., in Knoxville, in
charge of arrangements.
Barbara Mary Riddell Compton, 74, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born July 4, 1930, to George and Betty
Riddell of Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Barbara's career as a registered nurse
spanned decades. Initially a specialist in post-anesthesia care, she later found a
love for geriatric nursing. She worked for many years at the Oak Ridge
Healthcare Center and at the Oak Ridge Retirement Center, where she forged many caring
relationships with her patients and their families. After she retired from
nursing, she was engaged as a nanny for the Hagemeyer family. She found much
love and happiness caring for Peter and Mary Grace. She was a member of St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church for over 45 years. Barbara especially treasured time
spent with her beloved granddaughter, Mary Faith. They shared a rich and loving
relationship. Birds and squirrels always found a banquet at her feeders. Her
quirks, charms, and gallant nature will be missed. She is survived by Stephanie
"Becky" Ryan and Ernest L. "Larry" Ryan Jr. and their daughter Mary Faith;
"son of her heart," Derek Hagemeyer and his children, Peter and Mary Grace; her
beloved niece, Nancy Riddell Edge; her nephew, Michael Riddell; Colin Compton;
Robin, Bill, Dietrich and Julianna Tullos; and by her beloved Siamese "Miss
Mieux." She is also survived by steadfast friends Louise and Harwell Smith, Mary
Ann Halstead, Lillian Hise, Jo Webb, Bob and Merita Browell, Terry and Hugh
Christie and family, Eleanor Evans, Janice and Rayman Fritch, and other special
friends. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2005, at
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Craig Kallio and the
Rev. Claire Keene officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
donations be made to public radio station WUOT, 209 ommunications Building, Knoxville,
TN 37996-0322; the Oak Ridge Public Library, 1401 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak
Ridge, TN 37830; or to St. Stephen's Outreach Fund, 212 North Tulane Ave., Oak
