The Rev. Everette C. Crites, 82, of Piedmont, Mo., died Monday, April 25,
2005, at his residence. He was born June 7, 1922, in Yount, Mo. The Rev. Crites
was a minister for over 50 years, owned and operated IGA grocery stores, and
was a member of First Baptist Church in Piedmont, Mo. He also was a veteran of
the U.S. Navy. The Rev. Crites is survived by his wife, Lois B. Hovis, whom he
married Feb. 17, 1945. He is also survived by his son, Richard Crites of
Greenville, Mo.; his daughters, Regina Hinkle of Oak Ridge, and Gaye Lynn
Blankenship of Licking, Mo.; his brother, Ralph Crites of Piedmont, Mo.; his sister,
Ruth Stull of Riverside, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at First
Baptist Church in Piedmont, Mo. The burial will be at Yount Cemetery in Perryville,
Mo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 28,
2005, at Ruegg Funeral Home in Piedmont, Mo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the American Heart Association, 7320 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX
75231.

Charles Reece Ewing Jr., 57, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Dayton, Tenn., died
Monday, April 25, 2005, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. The son of Charles
Ewing Sr. and Ina Ewing, he was born Nov. 3, 1947, in Harriman. Mr. Ewing was
a self-employed construction worker. He was a member of Williams Chapel AME
Zion Church and was a U.S. Army veteran. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by a brother and two sisters, Forrest Palmer, Virginia Martin
and Imogene Davis. Mr. Ewing is survived by his wife, Juanita Ewing of Dayton;
three daughters, Valonda Thomas of Atlanta, Chelcea Cooper of Oak Ridge, and
Tracy Wright of Rock Island, Ill.; three sons, Dyron Sammons of Springfield,
Ohio, Julian Taylor of Oak Ridge, and Charles Bailey of Oak Ridge; and three
stepchildren. He is also survived by several grandchildren including DaChaun
Trent, DaQuan Freeman, Dondre' Williams, A-Dymond Sammons, Autumn Thomas; his
brother, Lewis Martin of San Angelo, Texas; his aunt, Beulah Stone of Harriman; his
uncle, Rural Sharp of Ooltewah; and by many cousins, nieces and nephews. The
funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, in the chapel of
Evans Mortuary in Rockwood with the Rev. R. T. Smith officiating. A graveside
service and burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Rockwood. The family will
receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary. The family
requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Evans Mortuary, 805 N.
Gateway Ave., P.O. Box 6, Rockwood, TN 37854, for funeral expenses.

William "Bill" Fred Hayden, 80, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005,
at Windwood Health and Rehab Center in Clinton. The oldest of three children,
Bill was born March 16, 1925, in Danville, Penn., to Herb and Kate Hayden. He
graduated from Leominster High School in Leominster, Mass., enlisted in the
U.S. Navy and served as a lieutenant junior grade during World War II. Mr.
Hayden earned his master's degree in chemical engineering at Bucknell University
in 1948. Upon graduation he went to work for DuPont from 1948 until 1968, where
he discovered the way of colorizing nylon by adding enzymes to nylon while at
the Old Hickory Plant in Old Hickory, Tenn., and was an early pioneer in the
discovery of water-based paints when he worked at the Chambers Works in
Newark, N.J. In 1968, Mr. Hayden began working for Buckman Laboratories in Memphis
until he and his wife, Jane, moved to Oak Ridge and opened Ridge Handicrafts in
1977. Mr. Hayden was the janitor and chief gopher for Ridge Handicrafts, an
elder of the First Presbyterian Church, an associate member of the Foothills
Craft Guild, past president of the St. Andrews Society of East Tennessee and the
Scottish Society of East Tennessee in Knoxville, an active member of Clan Hay
of Tennessee, and a member of the University of Tennessee Arboretum. As an
elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Hayden hosted the monthly Supper
Club, was a member of the church's Troop Committee for Boy Scout Troop 42, and
was the chairman of the Building and Maintenance Committee. He was a lifelong
member of the Boy Scouts of America. As a council member of the Middle Tennessee
and Chickasaw Councils, he became a member of the Order of the Arrow and was
a graduate of the Wood Badge Leadership Program. His family said it was not
uncommon for Bill to get out his harmonica and start playing any number of his
favorite tunes for the customers who visited Ridge Handicrafts. He is preceded
in death by his daughter, Kathy Nix, who died of cancer March 25, 2003. Mr.
Hayden is survived by his wife, Jane, and his four sons, James and his wife,
Barbara, of Oak Ridge, and their two children, James Jr. and Shelley; John and
his wife, Kandy, of Huntsville, Ala., and their three children, Matthew and his
wife, Cindy, and David and Karen; Robert and his two children, Beth and her
husband, Chad, and Katie, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Timothy and his wife, Nora,
and their three children, Grace, Meagan and Anna of Memphis. James and
Timothy also have two additional children each, Mary Dawn and her husband, Danny of
Minneapolis, Minn., and Amy and her husband, Adam, born to James; and Timothy
Jr. and Jennifer, born to Timothy. Mary Dawn has three children, Anthony,
Christy and Alex; and Amy has one daughter, Luci. Mr. Hayden is also survived by
his two sisters, Helen Nelson of Upper Montclair, N.J., and Margie Atkins and
her husband, Ed Atkins, of Rockville Md. A memorial service will be held at 6
p.m. Friday, April 29, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kerra
English officiating. The family will receive guests after the service in the
fellowship hall of the church. The family is requesting that anyone wishing to

Charles T. "Charlie" Jackson, 80, of Clinton, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in
Fort Myers, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Erah Jones
Jackson; and his wife, Deane Jackson. Mr. Jackson is survived by his son,
Charles "Mickey" Jackson and wife, Laura, of Baxter; a granddaughter and her
husband, Chris and Laura Jackson Bell of Cookeville; and a grandson, Frank Jackson
of Nashville. He is also survived by a brother, Hubert Jackson of Booneville,
Ind.; and a sister, Ruby Jackson Parker of Charlotte, N.C. A memorial service
will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Oak Ridge Memorial
Park Chapel. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Doran Fletcher,
Eddie Bailiff, Billy Jo Campbell, Dalton Cooper, Jim Spangler, Greg Hawkins and
Bernard Hawkins will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family requests that
any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Lung Association, 61
Broadway, New York, NY 10006.

Clifford M. Nelson, 78, of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at
his home, surrounded by his family. The son of John H. Nelson and Martha
Miller Nelson, he was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Union County, and had lived in this
area since 1936. He was a member of New Fairview Baptist Church and had worked
as a cabinet maker for Masterwood of Harriman. In addition to his parents, he
was preceded in death by a brother and a sister, Virgil Nelson and Mable Raby.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorene Murray Nelson; four
daughters, Joanne Crowe and husband, Leroy, of Mentone, Ala., and Janie Webster,
Sue Ward and husband, Terry, and Sharon Massengill and husband, James O., all
of Harriman; six grandchildren, John Crowe, Daniel Crowe, Jimmy Bolden,
Trampus Ward, Tabitha Breeden and Chris Massengill; and six great-grandchildren. He
is also survived by three sisters, Lema Prater, Lillian Prater and Elsie
Harvey, all of Oliver Springs; and by many nieces, nephews, extended family
members and special friends. The family extends a special appreciation to all the
nurses and caregivers of Covenant Homecare Hospice for their help during Mr.
Nelson's illness. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, in the
chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Scott Queener and
the Rev. Kenny Stubbs officiating. A graveside service and burial will be at
11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at the New Fairview Cemetery in Oliver Springs. The
family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Phyllis Lynn Williams, 56, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.

Whitney Milen, 2 mos., died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Vanderbilt Children's
Hospital in Nashville. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of
the arrangements, which were incomplete at press time.
