Betty J. Artis, age 71 of Newcomb passed away April 13 at the Jellico
Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, James E. Artis of Newcomb;
mother, Gladys Walker of Knoxville; daughters, Dana Zachary of Corryton, Tracey
Green of Corryton; son, Charles Angel of Knoxville; sister, Bonnie Shields of
Knoxville; brother, Bill Walker of Seymour; five grandchildren and three great
grandchildren. Funeral services were April 16 at the Llewellyn Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Thomas officiating. Interment was in the Jellico
Cemetery. Llewellyn Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Marian Leigh Baxter because she ignored the embarrassing symptoms for far too
long, she announces her death from complications of metastatic colon cancer
on April 17. She leaves behind husband, Donovan Johnson; children, Ella Hulsey,
Jenna Hulsey, Stone Johnson, and Colleen Hulsey; parents, John and Carol
Baxter; brothers, John T. Jr. "Bo" Baxter and his wife Kelly, and Gregory Baxter;
grandparents, James and Mearl Macres; co-parents, Michael and Ana Hulsey; and
a fabulous family network of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and close
friends. She plans to be greeted on the other side by her dog "Duck," her
grandparents Rachel Macres, Frances and Tracy Baxter, and all her relatives and friends
who have passed before. She would like to personally request two favors from
each of you reading this obituary. The first is to get checked early for colon
cancer, no matter your age, and especially if you have symptoms (talk to your
doctor or check the internet). The other favor she asks is for you to do at
least one good deed in the next year, anonymously, for someone you do not know.

Helen Boling, age 74, of Crossville, formerly of LaFollette, passed away
April 12. She was a member of Faithway Assembly of God. She was preceded in death
by her father John Ervin Treadway; granddaughter Nancy Lynn Rupert.She is
survived by her son,Charles Pike, Straw Plains;daughters, Claudia Angel,
Crossville, Sharefah Abdul'Quwiyy, Kalamazoo, MI,Cathy Rupert, St. Marys, Ohio; 11
grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren , two special great-grandchildren: Aaron
Aliey and Bry'ana Hancock; mother, Myrtle Effie Beeler, Knoxville; sister,Anna
Sneed, Knoxville; brothers, Erv Treadway, Jr., NC and Jimmie Ray Treadway, Fla.
Funeral Services were April 14 at the Faithway Assembly of God with the Rev.

J.B. Cooper, age 65 of LaFollette passed away April 7 at St. Mary's Hospice
of Knoxville. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was a loving
husband, father, and papaw who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He was also an avid University of Tennessee fan. He was retired from Austin
Powder Company with 21 years of service. His granddaughter, Holly was his pride
and joy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Bertha Nance
Cooper. He is survived by his wife, Della Cooper of LaFollette; daughters and son in
laws, Sherry and Barney Ray of LaFollette and Traci and Stanley Heatherly of
Jacksboro; very special granddaughter, Holly Ray of LaFollette; special
nephews, Charles Wright of LaFollette and Condy Love of Jacksboro; several nieces
and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were April 9 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home
with the Brother David Shepherd and Brother Earl Wilson officiating. Interment
was in the Indian Creek Cemetery. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of

Nancy Jane Osborne Cox was born March 7, 1924 and died suddenly April 12 at
her home in Harriman at the age of 81 years, one month and five days. She was
formerly of Morley and a member of Morley Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Joseph James Cox; father and mother; two brothers; two
sisters; one infant daughter; four infant sons; oldest son, Carl Edward Cox of
Pearisburg, VA; grandson, David Dewaine of Morley. She is survived by her sons,
Jesse Lee Cox, formerly of Roses Creek and James Lewis Cox of Harriman;
daughters, Mary Lou (Cox) Murray, Deborah Jane Cox, both of Harriman and Ellen
(Cox) Voyles and husband, Floyd of Jellico; daughter-in-law, Gail Cox of
Pearisburg, VA; grandchildren, Edna Lou (Murray) Turpin and husband, Junior of
Harriman, Bryan Voyles and wife, Ranee of Jellico, Wally Voyles and wife, Donna of
Jellico, Missy (Cox) Simpkins and husband, Tim of Pearisburg, VA, Marie (Cox)

Sylvia J. Miller Disney, age 64 of Caryville passed away April 19 at her
home. She was a member of Caryville First Baptist Church. She was secretary at
Cross Funeral Home for the past 25 years. She was preceded in death by her
father, Leland Miller, Sr.; brothers, Leland Miller, Jr. and Timothy Miller; sister,
Lorene Miller. She is survived by her husband, Kelly Disney of Caryville;
daughter, Lynn Disney Newport of Caryville; son and daughter-in-law, Leland and
Andrea Disney of Caryville; grandchildren, Ricky and Kelli Newport and Morgan
Danielle Brown; mother, Albenia Miller of Lake City; brothers, Kenneth Prater
of FLA, Frank and Tommy Miller, both of LaFollette; sisters, Barbara Gott of

Fred Farmer, age 77 of LaFollette, passed away April 15 at Baptist Hospital
in Knoxville. He was a member of Central Baptist Church. He enjoyed
woodworking, gardening, and hunting. He retired from Y-12 after several years of service.
He loved spending time with his family, who he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Sabara Ward Farmer;
brother, Hobert Farmer; sisters, Hazel Newport and Margaret Seiber.
He is survived by his wife, Arvena Farmer of LaFollette; sons and daughter in
laws, Freddie Dewayne and Zina Farmer of Jacksboro and Jerry Lynn and Jill
Farmer of Caryville; daughters and son in laws, Ellen and Dexter Marlow and
Linda Jane and Jimmy Ray Burris all of Jacksboro; grandchildren; David and Roopal
Marlow, Brian and Jonathan Marlow, Alex, Sara, and Lauren Farmer; brother,
Raymond Farmer of Caryville; sisters, Zelma Sisk of Jacksboro and Ruby Byrge of
Knoxville; several nieces and nephews and host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were April 18 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home
with Rev. Harold Duncan and Rev. Jobby Byrge officiating. Interment was in

Joe Clyde Goins passed away April 16 at 12:15 a.m. at Heartland Nursing Home
and Rehabilitation Center in Greenville after suffering a broken leg following
a fall on Dec. 27. He was born Sept. 4, 1911 the youngest of eight children
of Preston and Helen Turner Goins in rural Campbell County. He graduated from
the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he earned the degree of Bachelor
of Science with a major in education in 1941. He later earned Master of
Science and EDS degrees from the University of Tennessee. He taught in the public
schools of Campbell County for 18 years, serving as principal of LaFollette
High School for three years. He also worked for the Tennessee Department of
Education as a supervisor of trade and industrial education for a year. In 1966, he
retired from the State of Tennessee and moved to Greenville where he served
five years as a secondary supervisor for Darke County schools. In 1972, he was
appointed Superintendent of Darke County Schools in which he served until
retiring in 1980. he held membership in the National Education Association, the
Lota Lambda Sigma Fraternity, the Ohio Education Association, the American
Association of School Administrators, the Buckeye Association of School
Administrators; Kiwanis Club of Greenville, the Masonic Lodge and Kerbella Shrine in
Knoxville and the First United Methodist Church of Greeneville. Although he never
sought public office, he was a staunch Republican. Aside from his loyalty to
the Methodist Church and the education profession, good humor and friendliness
were hallmarks of his happy life. Often when asked what he would like to order
at a restaurant, he would respond with (to pull the leg of the waitress) "a
million dollars, a quart of whiskey and a big fat hen." He entertained his
friends with a steady stream of humorous stories, many centered around his early
life back in rural Tennessee. As a boy, he played the fiddle (not the violin)
in a country band. In later years he enjoyed playing his French harp
(harmonica) for Church and Kiwanis gatherings. Regarding his speech, he always
maintained he hadn't a southern accent but an Appalachian brogue. He loved sports,
especially football, basketball and baseball and he enjoyed playing golf with his
friends. Only recently did he relinquish his season tickets to the University
of Tennessee football games. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Naomi
Claiborne Goins; daughter, Gail Goins Applegate of Brentwood; granddaughters,
Catherine Applegate Carney of Farmington Hill, MI and Margaret Applegate Kramer
of Memphis; great grandchildren, Sean Carney, Matthew Carney, Maria Kramer and
Anna Kramer. Graveside services will be held April 25 at 10 a.m. at the
Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial
contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place,
Memphis, TN 38105; Account Number 13368718. Cross Funeral Home was in charge of the

Warren G. Howell, age 81 of LaFollette passed away April 18 at the St. Mary's
Medical Center in Knoxville. He was the former pastor of Eastside Weslyan of
LaFollette. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and father-in-law
who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a veteran of
World War II. He was always working for the Lord. He was preceded in death by
his parents, William and Gertrude Wisner Howell and brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Howell of LaFollette; daughters and
sons-in-law, Kathy and Joe Leach of LaFollette, Sharlene and Ron Hood of Athens, TN;
grandchildren and spouses: Teressa and Edward Vowell of Clinton; Kent and
Cindy Leach of LaFollette; several nieces and nephews and a host of other
relatives and friends. Funeral Services were April 19 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson
Funeral Home with Rev. I.C. Gardner, Rev. S.E. Condon and Rev. David Gresser
officiating. Interment was in Bakers Forge Cemetery. Martin Wilson Funeral Home

Ilene Davis Hubbard, age 85, of Silvis, Ill, formerly of LaFollette, passed
away
April 11. She was born in Campbell County and was the daughter of the late
M.O. (Ollie) Davis and Velia Ragle Branam Davis. She was preceded in death by
her sons, Jimmy and Kyle Puckett; granddaughter, Gail Jacobson; sisters, Carrie
Simcox, Evelyn Cox, Georgia McGhee, Ora Silcox, Lorene Lynch and Betty
Collyer, brothers, Bill, Woodward, Calvin, Henry and Houston Davis and Hobert
Branam.She is survived by her sisters, Mildred Sweat, LaFollette, Edda English,
Riverside, CA; brother, Marvin Davis, Chattanooga; one granddaughter and three
grandsons Funeral service and interment were April 14 in Silvis, ILL.
Connie Helen Jackson, age 62 of Lakeland, FLA passed away April 13 at
Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was born July 6, 1942 in Winfield, TN. She was
a homemaker and of the Pentecostal/Holiness faith. She is survived by her
husband, Troy Jackson, Sr. of Lakeland; sons, Johnny Lewis "J.J." Jackson of
Lakeland, Troy Jackson, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC, Timothy Gregory Jackson of
Goldsboro, NC; daughters, Robin Lynn Trammell of New Tazewell, Patricia Lynn
Broadwell of Williamsburg, KY, Bertha Luann Beasley of Lakeland; mother and father,
Martha Violet and Lewis Theodore Silcox of Lakeland, FLA; brothers, Johnny C.
Silcox of Jellico, Lewis Theodore Silcox, Jr. of Newcomb; sisters, Geraldine
Crabtree and Linda Albertini of Lakeland; nine grandchildren and two great

Jacqueline Elaine (Jacque) King, age 38 of LaFollette, passed away April 12
at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville. She was a member of the Lake City
Church of God of the Mountain Assembly. She is the daughter of Joie Leavitt of
1217 West Walden Street in LaFollette and Jim Leavitt of Massachusetts Avenue of
LaFollette. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Charlie King and
children, Jamie Harbin age 16, Devonna Harbin age 12, and John King age 9 all
of LaFollette; Other survivors include her sister, Janet Ellison and her
husband, Terry; brother, James Leavitt; grandmother, Idessa Powell of Jacksboro.
She will be missed by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces,
nephews, and a very supportive mother and father-in-law, Vickie and Garfield King.
Funeral services were April 15 at Walters Chapel with Rev. Ralph Combs
officiating. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Walters Funeral Home was in

Marie Delphia McGhee, age 90 of the Cherry Bottom Community in Caryville
passed away April 12 at the Lake City Health Care Center. She was a member of the
Cherry Bottom Baptist church and steadfast in her faith and love of God. She
was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she taught three
generations of her family the true meaning of faith, sacrifice and unconditional
love. She was preceded in death by her mother, Srepty Burress; brother, Willie
Eddington; sister, Lillian McGhee; husband, Brassfield McGhee; sons, Schubert Lee
McGhee and Harold Dean McGhee. She will forever be missed by her daughters,
Florene Hill of Caryville, Brenda Hart of Dalton, Ga, Ronnie McGhee of
Caryville, Terry McGhee of Caryville and Gene and wife, Delaine McGhee of Clinton;
grandchildren, Dean Dillion of Nashville, Faith R. McCullah of Jacksboro, Hope

Lewis William Madron, age 76 of LaFollette passed away April 18 at his home.
He was of the Holiness faith. He went to the New Ivy Dell Church of God. He
was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed hunting
ginseng.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Bruce Madron; son, Billy Joe
Madron; grandchild, Jordan Douglas; parents, Luther and Celia Madron; sisters,
Matoline Hatfield, Irene Madron; Euretha Madron and Naomi Allen; brother,
Willard Madron. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Willard and Gracie
Madron of Jacksboro, Wayne Madron, Steve and Teresa Madron and Rick and Betty
Madron all of LaFollette; daughters and sons-in-law, Donald and Judy Campbell
of Jacksboro, Sherry and Jimmy Thompson of LaFollette; 26 grandchildren and 27
great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives
and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22 at the
New Ivey Dale Church of God with Rev. Lloyd Campbell and Rev. James Leach
officiating. Internment will follow in Bakers Forge Cemetery. The family will
receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 21 at Martin Wilson Funeral
Home. His body will lie in state from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. before services at the

Hester Aretta Hunter Massengill, age 72 of Speedwell passed away April 13 at
the Claiborne County Hospital. She was born July 22, 1933 in Wagon Hollow. She
was member of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, James Massengill; dad, Jessie Hunter; mother, Clara
Gibson Hunter; brothers, Verlin and Jeff Hunter. She is survived by her children
James (Brenda) Hunter, Rachel Hunter, Jefferson Hunter, Clifford (Gail) Hunter,
Clyde (Dawn) Massengill, Ronnie Eugene (Jenny) Massengill, Robin (Alva Dean)
Wilder, all of Speedwell; grandchildren, Joy Johnson, Nicole Hunter, Nolan
Gibson, Krystal Gibson Martin, Stacy Wiley, Thomas Hunter, Matthew Massengill,
Chasity Massengill, Zack and Brittany Dunsmore, Heather Pacioreck and an unborn
grandson; 11 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lucille Hunter, Salle
Mae Hunter, Maggie Russell, Beatrice Davis, Joe, John and George Hunter; a host

child she didn't love and they all loved her, an unconditional love. Funeral

Charles Edward Ray, age 66 of Ashville, NC formerly of LaFollette passed away
April 12 at the Mission Hospital in Ashville. He was of the Baptist Faith and
enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death
by his son, Herman Ball and parents. He is survived by his wife, Edith Carol
Ray of Ashville, NC; sons, Sherman Leverne Ball of GA, Thurman Ball of Kodak;
daughters, Dorothy Brown of Ashville, NC, Joyce Ivey of LaFollette; nine
grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sister: Dorothy of OH; several nieces
and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside Services were
April 17 in Bakers Forge Cemetery with Rev. Hobert McCreary officiating. Martin

J. Will Smith, age 84 of Okeechobee, FLA passed away April 11. He was born
and raised in Campbell County. He was a member of Treasure Island Baptist
Church. He was retired from General Motors where was a job setter. He was a Navy
Veteran having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his grandsons,
Charles McGregor, Jerry and David Smith; parents, James Bart and Ida Reed
Smith; sister, Ethel Raines; brothers, Hubert, Claude, Edward and Everett Smith;
daughter in law, Janice Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Ann
McGregor and husband, Wayne of Okeechobee, FLA; sons, Sammy Ray Smith of Danville,
ALA, Jerry Wayne Smith and wife, Glenna of Okeechobee, FLA; sisters, Neva
Brown of Lake City, Faye Smiddy of Clinton and Della "Bo" Chapman of Lake City; 14
grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a
host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were April 15 at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City
with the Rev. Brian Courtney and Rev. Bill Raines officiating. Interment was
in the Bakers Forge Cemetery with full military honors by the Campbell County
Honor Guard. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Jean Winningham Thurston, 85, of LaFollette passed away April 19. She was
born in Cumberland Valley Lumber Camp in Fentress County and grew up in Oneida
and Knoxville. She graduated from Central High School in Knoxville and received
a degree in business from the University of Tennessee. She taught for many
years in the Memphis City Schools system and worked as a volunteer in the
literacy program and as a docent for Brooks Memorial Art Gallery in Memphis. Her
hobbies were travel, golf, reading, bird watching and wildflower searches, and she
loved the poetry of Robert Frost. She was preceded in death by her husband,
James B. Thurston, and two sisters, Wilda Johnson of Knoxville and Kim Yates of
Arlington, Texas. She is survived by her sister Evelyn Jeffers; four
children, Becky Robinson and her husband Blythe, James H. Thurston, Kay Finch and her
husband Steve, and Linda Thurston; four grandchildren, Stuart Finch, Kelly
Finch, Bill Robinson and Jonathan Robinson, and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 23, at 2 p.m. at Middle Creek United
Methodist Church in Sevierville with the Rev. Jerry Page officiating. Interment
will follow at Middle Creek Cemetery. Those who wish to make a donation in lieu
of flowers are asked to contribute to the National Center for Family Literacy.

Dondia "De De" Michelle Wildman, age 30 of Jacksboro passed away suddenly due
to injuries sustained in an automobile accident on April 12 at the Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was born June 19, 1974 in Jackson, TN. She
was a Christian. She enjoyed working with people; she was employed by Blue Ridge
Foods where she worked as a manager of Burger King. She was preceded in death
by her grandparents, Clyde and Nona Hellums. She is survived by her husband,
Chris Wildman of Jacksboro; daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Wildman of Jacksboro;
father, Don Brown of Jacksboro; mother, Blendia Hellums of Jacksboro; sisters,
Becky Brown Cross of Smokey Junction and Laura June Brown of Jacksboro;
grandparents, Harry and Betty Brown of Jacksboro.
Funeral services were April 14 at the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Ralph Wilson officiating. Interment was in the Norris Memorial Gardens.
Hatmaker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
