DOHERTY, DAVID G. - 89 of Oak Ridge,
DOHERTY, DAVID G. - 89 of Oak Ridge, died early Sunday morning, March 20,
2005 at Methodist Medical Center. The only child of David Francis and Emma Getreu
Doherty, he was born on July 22, 1915 in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Doherty
graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and then obtained a B.S. degree in
Chemistry from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (now University) in 1935. He was
a member of Alpha Sigma Chi Fraternity. He worked at Rockefeller Institute in
medical research and attended night school, getting his Masters Degree in
Organic Chemistry in 1940. Dr. Doherty was awarded a Research Fellowship at the
University of Wisconsin in Biochemistry. He worked with the Department of
Agriculture for one and a half years and then went into the Navy. He was
commissioned an Ensign in 1943 and assigned as an Engineer with P.T. Boats. He worked at
the National Naval Medical Institute and went into the Naval Reserves in 1946.
Dr. Doherty married Margaret Louise Phillips, the love of his life, who had
grown up on the same block as he had. The couple returned to the University of
Wisconsin where Dr. Doherty received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1948. David
and Margaret Doherty moved to Oak Ridge in 1948 when David joined the ORNL
Biology Division as a Group Leader. He wrote or co-authored almost 70 research
papers during his tenure there. Dr. Doherty retired on October 1, 1981 with 33
years of service. Dr. Doherty's retirement years were just as active as his
earlier life. A sailor all his life, he served as the First Commodore of Cedar
Point Yacht Club in Westport, Connecticut in 1933. During the 1950's he had an
active pilot license, and co-owned a single engine plane that he flew out of
Oliver Springs Airport. In the mid 60's, he bought a Thistle sailboat and joined
the Concord Yacht Club. The Doherty's were active members there from 1964,
with Dr. Doherty serving as Commodore three different times. As recently as the
previous weekend, he sailed his San Juan 34 in the Sunday afternoon races. Dr.
Doherty was also active in the U.S. Power Squadron and the U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliary (Division Captain for 3 years). He also read for Recording for the
Blind for over 15 years and was a member of the Wheat Investment Club. Survivors
include: wife of 59 years, Margaret Phillips Doherty; five daughters, Linda
Doherty Buckles and husband, John of Kingsport, TN, Doris A. Doherty and
husband, Randy Gann of Oak Ridge, Nancy Doherty Balchik and husband, Mark of Forest,
VA, Susan Doherty Mayes and husband, Steven of Santa Fe, NM, Janet Doherty
Lane and husband, Terence of Charlotte, NC; 9 grandchildren, Jacqueline Buckles,
Taylor Ripley, Spencer Ripley, Hunter Ripley, Kyle Balchik, Alex Balchik,
Erin Emory, Avery Lane, and Christopher Lane; niece, Vicky Marrow and husband,
Steve. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Weatherford Mortuary on
Thursday evening, March 24, 2005 at 5:30 pm with Rev. Kerra Becker English
officiating. The family will receive friends afterwards from 6-8 pm. A graveside
service will be Friday, 10 am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Dr. Doherty
requested that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Concord Sailing
Center, PO Box 22781, Knoxville, TN 37933, Attn: Treasurer. An online guest book
