Caroline Summitt Francis, long-time resident of LaFollette and Marietta, GA
died Oct. 6 of complications from chronic renal failure and Alzheimer disease
at the home of her son in DeKalb County, GA. She was born June 23, 1921 in her
parents' home on East Central Avenue in LaFollette. Her family moved from
LaFollette to Coal Creek when she was three years old and back to LaFollette five
years later. She graduated in 1937 at age 15 from LaFollette High School,
where she appeared in several school plays and was the editor of the school
newspaper, "The Valley Echo." She attended Brenau College in Gainsville, GA for one
year and then transferred to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where
she graduated in 1941. She and Paul Bailey Francis, Sr., also of LaFollette were
married in 1940 in Sevierville. She was a schoolteacher at LaFollette High
School in 1941-1942 and resigned to accept a position as secretary for Francis
Rex Coal Company. In Dec. 1944, she saved herself, her one year old son and her
unborn child from death in a house fire by falling out of a second story
window in the snow with her son in her arms. Her husband and she built the brick
home at 100 Linden Park in 1948. She operated Francis Gift Shop in LaFollette
for several years in the 1950's and returned to LaFollette High School in 1958,
where she served as Business Education teacher, guidance counselor, and
Distributive Education Coordinator. In the summer of 1964, she entered the Graduate
School of the University of Tennessee and received a Master in Science degree
with a major in Guidance in 1970. In May 1968, she accepted a position as
Federal Projects Coordinator and Supervisor of Guidance and Vocational Education
for the Campbell County Department of Education, from which she retired in
1973. After retirement, she lived for 28 years in Marietta, GA, where she was
active in her Zeta Tau Alpha sorority alumni association, several bridge clubs,
and the Indian Hills Country Club women's golf association, for which she
served as president for one term. Her honors there included a hole-in-one in 1982
and the women's golf association Seniors Tournament Champion in 1986. She was
the granddaughter of physician and former mayor of LaFollette, Dr. Ulysses S.
G. Carden and wife, Ida F. Brown Carden and also of Professor James H. and
Laura M. Wolford Summitt, all formerly of LaFollette. She was preceded in death by
her first husband, Paul Bailey Francis, Sr.; parents, James Boyd and Vera
Carden Summitt; son, Dr. James Boyd Francis. She is survived by her son, Dr. Paul
Bailey Francis, Jr. and wife, Linda of Atlanta, GA; daughter-in-law, Angie S.
Francis of White Stone, VA; step-children, Lee Blasing and husband, Rick, Jer
LaSuer, all of Birmingham, AL; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren
and three great grandchildren. In LaFollette, she was a member of the First
Baptist Church. In Marietta, she was a member of the Lutheran Church of the
Incarnation. The body was cremated. A memorial service is planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her name be made to
any worthwhile charity.
Evelyn Huddleston age 85 of the Stinking Creek Community in LaFollette, went
home to be with her Lord and to join her dear husband, Everett, on Oct. 7. She
was a devoted mother and grandmother, friend and companion whose greatest joy
was having her family gathered round her. She was a faithful, long time
member of the Walnut Grove United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband of 58 years, Everett Huddleston and by their son, Jackie Henry
Huddleston.She is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Janice Powers and
husband, Delmas, Agnes Seibers and husband, Carl, Millie Garrison and husband, Bob,
Eunice Reynolds, Nancy Green, Gail LeBlanc and husband, Lanny, Norma Asher and
husband, Ronnie, Rhonda Douglas and husband, Garry; son, Jay Huddleston and
wife, Linda; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillie
Kidwell of LaFollette, Opal Carr of Ohio, Fay Goodman of Fla; brothers, Hubert
Kidwell and Everett Kidwell both of LaFollette, Clyde Kidwell of Crossville, and
Dewey Kidwell of Jefferson City; several nieces, nephews, and a host of near
and distant relatives and friends to mourn her passing and to miss seeing her
beautiful smile.Funeral services were Oct. 10 at the Walnut Grove Baptist Church
with Rev. Delmas Bruce, Rev. Lonnie Kennedy, and Rev. Robert Green
officiating. Interment was in the Hall Cemetery with her grandsons given the honor of
serving as pallbearers. Walters Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Clarence McNeeley, age 73 of LaFollette died Oct. 4 in Tifton, GA. He was a
member of the Long Hollow Baptist Church. He was member of the DAV. He served
in the Korean Conflict. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great
grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also was known
as the log cabin man who built miniature replica log cabins and old home
places. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Geneva Orick; parents, John
Calvin and Amanda Miller McNeeley; brothers, Boyd, Albert and Emerson McNeeley;
sister, Druzella McNeeley. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bryan
and Becky McNeeley of LaFollette; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Pat Bunch
of Lakeland, FL; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren; sister:
Juanita Watson of Oliver Springs; several nieces and nephews and a host of other
relatives and friends.Funeral Services were Oct. 9 in the Chapel of Martin
Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Maxwell and Rev. Mike Smith officiating.
Interment was in Bakers Forge Cemetery with the Campbell County Honor Guard in
charge of graveside services. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Christine Blank Marquis, age 72 of Caryville died Oct. 10 at her home. She
was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Carl and Flossie Sissom Blank; brother, Howard Blank; sisters, Wilma Welch,
Mary Louise Munguia and Carlene Madron.She is survived by her husband, Ted
Marquis, Caryville, sons, Bruce Welch, New Lebanon, OH, Bart and Jennifer Welch,
Powell; daughters, Faye Ebright and husband, John, Caryville, Dora England,
Germantown, OH, Joyce Sharp, Knoxville; 14 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren; brother, Johnnie Blank, Rockwood; step-children, Ted A. Marquis and
Cathy Jo Dibley; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services
were Oct. 12 at Cross Chapel with Rev. Steve Elkins officiating. Interment was
in the Oddfellows Cemetery in Rockwood. The family requests that memorials be
made to the St. Jude Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, Attn:
Memorial Department. Cross Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Grace Lee Harp Mullins, age 61 of Arthur died Oct. 11 at the Claiborne County
Hospital. She was born June 22, 1943 in Bell County, KY. She was of the
Baptist faith and loved to sew. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lilly Ray
Harp; son, Michael Miracle; husband, Jasper. She is survived by her husband,
Harold Mullins of Arthur; father, Elmer Harp of Speedwell; son, Timmy Miracle
of Arthur; daughters, Beverly Glasco of Arthur, Janet and husband, John Collins
of Harrogate; Sharon and husband, Steve Hunley of Speedwell; brothers, J.D.
and wife, Cleda Harp of Speedwell, Junior and wife, Hope Harp of Harrogate,
Wilburn and wife, Billie Mae Harp of Speedwell, David and wife, Betty Harp of
LaFollette; 15 grandchildren, six great grandchildren; a host of family and
friends.
Funeral services were Oct. 13 at the Chenoa Missionary Baptist Church with
Revs. Raymond Albright, Johnny Brown and Terry Brock officiating. Interment was
in the Chenoa Cemetery in Frakes, KY. Reece Funeral Home and Valley Chapel was
in charge of the arrangements.
Patricia A. Nelson age 56, born April 3, 1948. A native of LaFollette, who
had moved to Kokomo, Indiana six years ago was welcomed home to be with the Lord
Jesus Christ on Oct. 9 . She was preceded in death by her husband, Veldon
Nelson; parents, Hobert and Mary Stagnolia; five sisters, and one brother. She is
survived by her son, Brian Nelson of LaFollette and Todd Nelson of Mount Oak,
OH; daughters, Renee Bruch of Pennsylvania, Katina Price of Knoxville, and
Jennifer Nelson of Kokomo, IN; nine grandchildren; sisters, Bessie Everhart of
Kokomo, IN, Eva Thomas of Frankford, IN, Rosie Abney of Galveston, IN, and Ella
Faye Wilson of Jacksboro; brothers, William Stagnolia of LaFollette, and Fred
Stagnolia of Jacksboro; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Funeral services were Oct. 13 at Eller's Funeral Home with interment to
follow. Eller's Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Preston David Presley died suddenly at his home on Oct. 4. He worked for
Burroughs for 36 years, many of them as a field engineering manager in Lima, OH.
He was a member of the LaFollette United Methodist Church, where he sang in the
choir for many years. He was also on the board of Food Life Services of
Campbell County and was a Boy Scout leader in Lima, OH and in the Cumberland
District. He grew up in the Akron, OH area; he served in the Army Air Corps I World
War II and in the Naval Air Reserve during the Korean Conflict. He was
preceded in death by his mother, Marie Dennis; brother, Darold Slabaugh; grandson,
Matthew Presley. He is survived by his wife, Ruby; son, David of Freemont, OH;
grandchildren, Amanda and Steven; son, Gary of Milford, OH; daughter-in-law,
Christine and grandchildren, Nicole, Caitlin and William; sisters, Norma
Coughlin and Sheryle Ball and husband, Paul; brother, Gary Slabaugh and wife, Alyce;
sister-in-law, Debra Slabaugh; extended family includes, Ola Wood; Dr. Burgin
and Jo Wood, Wilma Johnston and Mike and Jane Westbrook.
Memorial services were held Oct. 7 at the LaFollette United Methodist Church.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Food Life
Services of Campbell County (P.O. Box 804, Jacksboro, TN 37757); to Cub Scout
Pack 435 at LaFollette United Methodist Church or Boy Scout Troop 622 at
LaFollette Presbyterian Church of the computer lab at East LaFollette Elementary
School. Cross Family Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
Martha Carolyn Russell, age 81 of Jacksboro died Oct. 6 at the St. Mary's
Medical Center of Campbell County. She was a member of the Jake's Branch Baptist
Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who
enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed doing
crocheting. She was preceded in death by her first husband: William Brian Richardson;
second husband, Rev. Alfred Russell; daughters, Brenda Lou and Katie Sue
Richardson; parents, Andrew Jackson and Maudie Braden Brock; brothers, J.C., Carson,
Erman, Charles, Delbert, William, Horace, and Robert Brock; sister, Della
King. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, William Clyde and Judy
Richardson of Caryville, Dennis Ray and Gail Richardson of LaFollette, Larry
Daniel and Kay Richardson of Jacksboro; daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Billy
Smithers of Jacksboro,Wilma June and Roger Ward of Knoxville, Anita and Arnold
Mason of LaFollette,Judy and Terry Gibson of Pioneer; 16 grandchildren and 16
great grandchildren; sisters, Ritta Lawson of IN; Ella Mae Buckner of
Newcomb; several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral
Services were Oct. 8 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home with Rev.
Tom Owens and Rev. Jimmy Griffith officiating. Interment was in Fairview
Cemetery. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Artie H. Smith, age 92 of Clinton died Oct. 5 at her residence. She was born
Jan. 23, 1912 in Anderson County to the late Luke and Berdie Rose Hendricks.
She was a member of the First Dutch Valley Missionary Baptist Church where she
served as a Sunday School Teacher. Her motto in life was "Keep your eyes on
Jesus." She loved quilting and gardening. She was preceded in death by her
parents; step-mother, Stella Hendricks; husband, Robert E. Smith; daughter, Mildred
Seiber; great grandson, Shawn Cowan; son-in-laws, Sam Phillips, Jr and David
Piehl; brother, Carl Hendricks.
She is survived by her sons, Robert G. Smith, Clinton, James L. Smith and
wife, Carol, Clinton, Roger Lane and wife, Brenda, Clinton; daughters, Shirley J.
Phillips, Clinton, Eidlene Piehl, Charlton, Mass., Joyce Kaler and husband,
Robert, Clinton, Gloria Phillips and husband, Ronnie L., Clinton, Jean Lane,
Clinton; brothers, Floyd Hendricks, Clinton, Leon Hendricks, Marietta, GA;
sisters, Della Wilcox, Alabama, Millie Beets, Clinton; son-in-law, Roy Seiber,
Clinton; 25 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, seven great great
grandchildren. Funeral services were Oct. 9 at the First Dutch Valley Missionary Baptist
Church with Rev. Jeff Parrott and Rev. Dennis Armes officiating. Interment was
in the Poplar Creek Cemetery. Hatmaker Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Genevie Nikeo Smith, age 53 of LaFollette died Oct. 10 at the St. Mary's
Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a member of the Charity Worship Center. She
loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. She was preceded in death
by her daughter, Elizabeth Smith; parents, Boyd and Marie Jones Murray;
brothers, Popeye and Bill Murray; sister, Niena Murray.She is survived by her
husband, Freddy Smith; son, Jason Smith; daughters, Patricia and Gladys Marie Smith;
five grandchildren; brother, Roger Murray all of LaFollette, Don and Bobby
Murray both of KY, Kenneth Murray of TN; sisters, Wilma Wilson of KY; Louwanda
Young of Jellico, Shirley Partin of LaFollette; several nieces and nephews and
a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services were Oct. 12 in the
Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home with Rev. Harry James officiating.
Interment was in Chadwell Cemetery. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Bertha Hill Simpson Tharpe, age 96 of Knoxville died Oct. 6 at the Hillcrest
Healthcare West in Knoxville. She was born July 9, 1908 in Scott County to the
late Richard and Nancy Jane Wright Hill. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Oza Simpson and William
Tharpe; son, Ova Simpson; daughter, Camille Simpson;, five brothers; seven
sisters; five grandchildren; son-in-laws, Roy Moon, Ira Jeffers, Ronda Jeffers and
Verlon Byrd; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Simpson.
She is survived by her sons, Buster Simpson and wife Sue, Caryville, Oza
Simpson and wife Marlene , Caryville, H.L. Simpson, Caryville; daughters, Mildred
Moon, Knoxville, Gladys Jeffers Stephens, Huntsville, Vivian Lindsay and
husband Otis, Knoxville, Gearldine Brock and husband Oscar , Jacksboro;
step-daughter, Mary Everett and husband Dale, Alcoa; daughter-in-law, Mary Rose Simpson,
LaFollette; 23 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 32 great great
grandchildren. Funeral services were Oct. 8 in the Hatmaker Funeral Home Chapel with
Rev. Fred Long officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery. Hatmaker
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Bonnie Carroll White, age 83 of LaFollette died Oct. 11 at the St. Mary's
Medical Center of Campbell County. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist
Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting and building play houses.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard White; son, Tommy White;
daughter, Wanda White; parents, Hauk and Ortha Riggs Carroll; brother, Floyd
Carroll. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Carolyn White
and Devon and Clita White all of LaFollette, Eddie and Renee White of Lake
City; son, Earl White of Jacksboro; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Rev.
Wayne Freeman of LaFollette, Lois and Renee Ronkeo; daughter, Judy White, all of
Jacksboro; 31 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and 14 great great
grandchildren; sister, Lillian Graham of LaFollette; several nieces and nephews and a
host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were Oct. 13 at the
Shield of Faith Church with Rev. Maynard Parker and Rev. Gary Moser officiating.
Interment was in Chadwell Cemetery. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
