Addie Porter Barger, age 92 died Sept. 28 at her residence. She lived in the
Rhea County area since 1927 and was an active member of the community. She
worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratories during World War II and sang with the
Holloway Quartet for many years. In addtition to being a homemaker, she retired
from Southern Silk Mill after 28 years of employment and was a lifetime
member of Wolf Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Newell T. Porter; second
husband, Harvey Barger; parents, George W. and Sara Wilson Bashears; Brown, Cal,
Wheeler, Nathan and Garfield Boshears; sisters, Josephine Brown, Jane Morton,
Ella Dossett, Ruby Moffett, Hannah Wilson and Minnie Bashears. She is survived
by several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Donna and Lee Starkey and Melissa
Barlow. Funeral services were Sept. 30 at the Wolf Creek Baptist Church with
Rev. Paul Forgey officiating. Interment was in the Spring City Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Wolf Creek Baptist Church, 5225 Wolf Creek Road,
Spring City, TN, 37381 in lieu of flowers. Vaughn Funeral Home was in charge of
the arrangements.
Jetta Blankenship, age 65 of Jellico died Oct. 4 at the 141 Exit South Hwy
I-75 in Caryville. She was born Aug. 30, 1939 at Jellico, the daughter of the
late Clyde and Annie Barley Singleton. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Marvin Blankenship; daughters, Rita Pauline McNealy and Cheryl Rebecca Fuson.
She is survived by her son, Benny McNealy of Jellico; step-son, Lonnie
McNealy of Fla; grandchildren, Benny Allen McNealy, Jr. and Jason Carl Lay, both of
Jellico, Kevin Bryan Lay of Corbin, KY; great grandchildren, Megan Lay and
Jaylyn Lay both of Corbin, KY, Hanna Lay of Jellico; sisters, JoAnn Silcox and
husband, Bill of Jellico, Betty Nealy of Jellico, Bessie Mae Leach and husband,
Estel of Lot, KY, Lottie Skelton and husband, Edgar of Detroit, MI;
half-sisters, Shirley Ayers, Thelma Perry, Brenda Lawson, all of Williamsburg, KY;
half-brothers, Joe Singleton and Willie Singleton, both of Williamsburg, KY.
Funeral services were Oct. 6 at the Cox and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerome
Walden and Rev. Ray Landes officiating. Interment will be Thursday (Oct. 7) at
11 a.m. in the Hackler Cemetery. Cox and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Marvin Edward Blankenship, age 58 of Jellico died died Oct. 4 at the 141 Exit
South Hwy I-75 in Caryville. He was born July 14, 1946 at Jellico the son of
the late Shelly and Minnie Murray Blankenship. He was Vietnam Veteran of the
U.S. Army and worked in the coal mines for several years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jetta Blankenship; daughters, Rita
Pauline McNealy and Cheryl Rebecca Fuson. He is survived by step-sons, Benny
McNealy of Jellico and Lonnie McNealy of Fla; brothers, Melvin Blankenship and
wife, Sharon of Elk Valley, William Wadsworth Blankenship and wife, Glenda of
LaFollette; sisters Peggy Bolton and husband, Jr. of Habersham, Cherry Wilson and
husband, Ronald of Jellico.
Funeral services were Oct. 6 at the Cox and Son Funeral Home with the Rev.
Jerome Walden and Rev. Ray Landes officiating. Interment will be Thursday (Oct.
7) at 11 a.m. in the Hackler Cemetery. Cox and Son Funeral Home was in charge
of the arrangements.
Roy Brewer, age 81 of LaFollette, formerly of Sneedville died Sept. 29 at St.
Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. He was a member of Trent Valley
Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Cordia Brewer;
eight brothers and seven sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mary Pauline
Brewer of LaFollette; daughter and son-in-law, Clara and Joseph Sharp of
LaFollette; grandson, Joseph McIntosh of Richmond, KY; sisters-in-law, Stella Brewer,
Mabel Greene, Betty Greene, Mary Greene, all of Sneedville, Lucille Brewer of
Kingsport and Norsie Brewer of Bowling Green, KY; a host of loving nieces,
nephews and friends. Funeral services were Oct. 1 at the McNeil Funeral Home
Chapel in Sneedville with Rev. Mark Roberts officiating. Interment was in the
Chandler Cemetery. McNeil Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy Norman Brown, age 88 of Dayton, OH died Oct. 3. She was born in
LaFollette on March 14, 1916 to the late William and Minnie Norman. She retired
from the S.S. Kresge with over 23 years of service. She was preceded in death by
her husband, George E. Brown; brother, James T. Norman; sisters, Grace
Hatmaker and Helen Guy. She is survived by her daughter; Reva Jane and husband, Davis
Postell of Dayton, OH; grandchildren, Darrell Postell of Trotwood and Donna
McBride of Dayton; great grandchildren, Holly, Jennifer and Dustin; great great
grandchildren, Jada and Tyler; sister, Ruth Fields of LaFollette; several
nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the George C. Martin Funeral Home Northridge
Chapel in Dayton, OH. Graveside services were at Woodlawn Cemetery in
LaFollette. George C. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements along with
Martin Wilson Funeral Home.
Mae Brown Cooper, age 84 of Fortville, Ind., formerly of LaFollette died Oct.
3 at the Harbor Manor Nursing Home, in Noblesville, Ind. She was a member of
Noblesville Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Travis
Cooper; parents, Forster and Nancy Sharp Brown; brothers, Charlie and Jay
Brown. She is survived by her daughter and son in law with whom she made her home,
Mary and Veldon Smith of Fortville, In; sons and daughters in law, Rev and
Lois Cooper, Oakboro, NC; Roy and Renee Cooper, Mooresville, In; Davis and Becky
Cooper, Lizton, In; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren one great great
grandchild and one great great great grandchild; brother, Isham Brown,
Jacksboro; sisters, Susie Ward, Caryville; Josie Lawson, LaFollette and Edna
Clotfelter, Knoxville; several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Oct. 6 at the Martin Wilson Chapel with the Rev. Everett
Cooper officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 7) Oak Grove
Cemetery. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Sharon Fiscus, age 51 of Parker City, IN, daughter of Clara Kennedy, niece of
Donna Brown of Jacksboro died in a one car accident on Sept. 22. She worked
at Anchor Glass in Winchester, IN for 31 years. She was a loving, mother,
grandmother, aunt and cousin who loved the outdoors working in her flowers,
listening to country music and shooting pool with her friends. She was a breast
cancer survivor. She was preceded in death by her father, grandparents, several
aunts, uncles, step-father, and several nephews.
She leaves behind her husband, Andy Fiscus; son, Tim Lowman; daughter,
Jennifer Devine and step-son, Daniel; grandchildren, Ashley, and Larry Smith,
Timothy, Anna, and Susan Lowman; sister: Connie Lewis all of Parker, IN;
half-brother, Tony Kennedy of Rockton, IL; many cousins, aunts and uncles. Services were
held Sept. 26 in Meeks Mortuary and Crematory Chapel in Muncie, IN. Memorials
may be directed to The Cancer Center at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, IN.
Meeks Mortuary and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.
Virgil Henderson, age 88 of Clairfield, born March 16, 1916 at Valley Creek,
TN, the son of the late Jeff and Polly Davis Henderson went to be with Jesus
in Heaven on Oct. 2 at the Jellico Community Hospital. He worked in the coal
mines for many years. He was a deacon at the Rock Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
He loved to play the guitar and sing praises to the Lord. He was a wonderful,
loving father and grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all those who
loved him. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Claude Henderson and Riley
Henderson; sisters, Florence Sowders and Elsie Brewer. He is survived by his
wife of 67 years, Edith Henderson of Clairfield; sons, Ray V. Henderson and
wife, Milly of Verona, KY, Billy Gene Henderson and wife, Janie of Vandalia, OH;
daughters, Judy Hatfield, Cathy Marlow and husband, James, Linda Parks and
husband, Allen , all of Clairfield, Maxine Partin and husband, Fred of Walton, KY;
25 randchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren;
sisters, Alice Partin of LaFollette and Edna Anderson of Dayton, OH.
Funeral services were Oct. 4 at Rock Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Rev.
Lonnie Lyke and Rev. Jimmy Bowman officiating. Interment was in the Highcliff
Cemetery. Cox and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Welthia Marie Hicks, age 87 of LaFollette died Oct. 4 at the St. Mary's
Medical Center of Campbell County. She was a member of the Red Ash Baptist Church.
She enjoyed working in her flowers and reading, and loved angels. Her family
was her life.She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ted Hicks; sons,
Billy, Don and John Hicks; parents, William and Mary Elizabeth Smithers
Bowling; one brother and two sisters. She is survived by her sons, Victor Hicks, Ken
and Wife, Mary Hicks all of LaFollette, Bob and Wife, Sue Hicks of Utica, MI,
James Jr. and Wife, Nancy Hicks of Warren, MI, Jack and Wife, Margaret Hicks
of Ferndale, MI, Carl and Wife, Imogene Hicks of Caryville; daughter: Bonnie
Lane of Caryville; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; four
great great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral
Services were Oct. 6 in the Chapel of Martin Wilson Funeral Home with Rev.
Delmus Bruce and Rev. Jehu Parks officiating. Interment was in the Smithers Family
Cemetery in Robbins. Martin Wilson Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
J.R. Norman, age 64 of Elk Valley died Sept. 30 at Vanderbilt University
Medical Center in Nashville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnson and
Zona Norman; brother, C.R. Norman; sisters, Irene Bridges and Mildred Norman;
daughter, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Alice Norman of Elk Valley;
sons, Jerry Norman and wife, Deanna of Elk Valley and Russell Norman and wife,
Angie of Elk Valley; daughter, Jamie Mays and husband, Les of Elk Valley;
grandchildren, Chris Norman and Amanda Norman of Elk Valley and Zachary Kitts of
LaFollette; brothers, Kelly Norman of Elk Valley and Earl Norman of Elk Valley;
sisters, Mary Powers of Dalton, GA, Ruth Beasley of Tunnel Hill, GA, Kathy
LeWallen of Elk Valley and Betty Shope of Cleveland; special aunt and uncle,
Johnie and Bessie Douglas of Jellico; a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Oct. 3 at Elk Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Harold
Norman and Rev. Calvin Lay officiating. Interment was in the Valley View Cemetery.
Harp Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Charles A. Odum, age 76 of Speedwell died Oct. 2 at his home. He was born
Jan. 7, 1928 in Letcher County, KY. He was of the Baptist faith. He worked for
Blue Diamond Coal Company in KY and Scott Paper Company. He was a member of the
Odd Fellows and loved fishing and camping on Norris Lake. He was preceded in
death by his parents, Radford and Lorinda Watts Odom; sisters, Beulah Morris
and Mae Back; grandson, Alex Ray Cook; son-in-laws, Stanley Hatfield and
Lawrence Payne. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Thelma Hall Odom, Speedwell;
son, Larry Allen Odum and wife, JoAnne Heiskell of Knoxville; daughters ,
Charles Ann Payne, Speedwell, Sandra Kaye and husband, Roger Young of Tazewell,
Mary Darlene Kohnie, Knoxville and Patricia Eileen and husband, Jim Kelly of
Oliver Springs; grandchildren, Penelope Varnell, Brandy Hatfield, Kenny Odum,
Missy Corcoran, Christopher Cook, Adam Hatfield, Jason Odum, Marty Young and Tony
Bull; great grandchildren, Hannah Hatfield and Emory Odum; sisters, Doris and
husband, Douglas Yaden of Cumberland, KY, Deloris and husband, Arlis Thompson
of Fairland, IN; a host of family and friends. Funeral services were Oct. 4
at Reece Valley Chapel with Rev. Billy Paul officiating. Graveside services
were in the Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jason Corcoran, Andy Welch, Jim
Kelly, Tony Bull, Larry Odum and Roger Young. Honorary Pallbearers were Edsel
Rains, Martin Young, Adam Hatfield, Gary Varnell Jr., and Kenny and Jason Odum.
Music was by Patricia Tarter. Reece Valley Chapel was in charge of the
arrangements.
Curtis Robinson, age 59 of New Tazewell was born June 18, 1945 and died Sept.
27 at his home. He was a Veteran of the United States Military. He was an
employee of St. Mary's Home Health Care of LaFollette. He was a longtime employee
of Bushline Industries and a locally known artist. He was preceded in death
by his Howard Robinson and Ruby Dillman Robinson Mabe; foster father, Wylie
Dillman and foster mother, Mary Dillman Chadwell. He is survived by his sister
and brother-in-law, Cloeva and Frank Dison of Middlesboro, KY; cousin and foster
brother, Benny Dillman of New Tazewell; half-sister, Fay Brooks;
half-brothers, Fred and Don Mabe, all of Rose Hill and Pennington Gap, VA; several other
cousins and friends.
Funeral services were Oct. 1 at the Coffey Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell
with Rev. Robert Yeary officiating. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery. Music
was by Terry Lock. Pallbearers were Glen Greer, Oscar Pillion, Estil Pillion,
Ray Pillion, Cecil Pillon and Russell Yeary. Coffey Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements.
Claren E. Vann, wife of Jerry Vann, formerly of Jellico died Sept. 24 at
Petersburg, MI, at the age of 62. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Vann of
Petersburg, MI; son, James Jerry Vann, Tommy Vann, Timmy Vann, all of
Petersburg, MI; daughter, Donna Vann of Petersburg, MI; parents, Harry and Irene Brown
of Petersburg, MI; sister, Sharon of Petersburg, MI.
Funeral services were Sept. 28 at Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home in
Temperance, MI with Pastor Von Loop officiating. Interment was in the Lake Township
Cemetery in Ohio. Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.
Steve Alvin Wilson, age 47 of Lake City died Sept. 27 at the Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was born July 25, 1957 in Anderson County to the
late Alvin and Ruth Aslinger Wilson. He was of the Baptist faith. He loved to
work on cars and spend time with his family. He was preceded in death by his
parents; sister, Sue Mowery. He is survived by his son, Stevie Ray Wilson of
Clinton; brother, Carl Wilson, Oak Ridge; sisters, Leona Goins, Oliver Springs and
Karen Phillips of Lake City. Graveside services were Sept. 30 at the Circle
Cemetery in Briceville with the Rev. Tom Byrge officiating. Hatmaker Funeral
Home was in charge of the arrangements.
