HATMAKER, FRED W. - age 63, of LaFollette & Knoxville, passed away Friday,
August 13, 2004. Former educator (too confining); banker (problems with FDIC);
and businessman (poor health). Loved controversy, politics, and poker. A
lifelong Democrat. Publicly, rascal and curmudgeon; privately, caring,
compassionate, and charitable. Natural comedian, master storyteller (many not true - all
embellished). A common person who became comfortable with the powerful, but
remained a champion of the people - a voice for those who were otherwise unheard.
Preceded in death by parents, Glenn & Hester Hatmaker. Survivors: Devoted wife
Doris; sons; Phillip and Wes (wife Thalia); grandchildren Ben and Abigail
(who don't know what they missed); sisters Margaret Ayers and Betty Taylor;
brothers A. J. and Mike Hatmaker; special uncle Walter; other relatives and friends
too many to name. Funeral service: 7 p.m., Monday, August 16, Cross Chapel
Rev. Darrell Ross officiating. Interment: 11 a.m. Tuesday Woodlawn Cemetery. The
family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the
Children's Center of the Cumberlands, or a church or other charitable organization of
the donor's choice. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at
Cross Funeral Home, LaFollette.
