CANTRELL, KATHRYN McLAIN - longtime Oak Ridge resident, died on February 14
at NHC Nursing Home in Oak Ridge. She had suffered from Alzheimer's for several
years. Mrs. Cantrell was born April 4, 1916 in Sylvia, North Carolina. She
was the oldest of six children born to Fred N. McLain and Juanita P. McLain.
After attending Asheville Normal and Teachers College, she taught Elementary
School in Balsam, North Carolina. She married Robert T. Cantrell on July 29, 1939.
They have two children; a daughter, Mary C. Underwood; and a son, The Rev.
Robert T. Cantrell, Jr. Mrs. Cantrell moved to Oak Ridge in 1944 to join her
husband, who began working there in 1943. She was actively involved at First
United Methodist Church where she served as a Children's Teacher, Chair of the
Membership and Evangelism Commission, and a member of Women for Outreach. She was
well known for her cooking, sewing, organizational ability, and her
compassion for all people, especially children, older adults, and the poor, and her
gracious smile. From 1961 to 1973 she served as Executive Director of the Oak
Ridge YWCA. Under her leadership, the YWCA expanded its outreach service in Oak
Ridge and Anderson County. She delighted in her family, and they delighted in
her. To her husband, she was "Toots," to her children, "Mom," to her
grandchildren "Gonga," to her sister and brothers, "Sis" or "Kat", and to her nieces and
nephews, "Aunt Kat." Mrs. Cantrell was preceded in death by: her parents; her
brother, George P. McLain; and her sister, Mary E. McLain. She is survived
by: her husband, Bob; daughter, Mary Underwood and son-in-law, Jim Underwood;
son Bob and daughter-in-law, Marie Cantrell all of Oak Ridge; grandchildren,
Doug Underwood of Bountiful, Utah, Mike Underwood of Huntsville, Alabama, Sara
Cantrell of Moorestown, New Jersey, and Wil Cantrell of Durham, North Carolina;
brothers, John McLain of Spruce Pine, North Carolina and Jim McLain and Fred
McLain both of Kingston, Tennessee; seven nieces and three nephews. The family
will receive friends Tuesday, February 17, 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the Parlor Room
203 of First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge. The funeral service will held
on Wednesday, February 18, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church with the burial
following the service in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Revs. Bill Mooney, Steven
Martin, and Amanda Bell will officiate. Memorial may be sent to First United
Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or YWCA Domestic
Violence Program, 1660 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. Martin Oak Ridge
Funeral Home is in charge.
CARROLL, RAYMOND (BEE) - age 84, of Lake City, TN, passed away Friday,
February 13, 2004. Visitation 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2004 at the
Hatmaker Funeral Home. Funeral Service 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2004 at the
Hatmaker Funeral Home. Interment 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at the
Farmers Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Clinton, Tennessee. Hatmaker Funeral
Home, Lake City in charge of arrangements.
JONES, LARRY DAVID JR. - 25 of Harriman, passed away early Saturday, February
14, 2004. Born on May 22,1978 in Oak Ridge, TN. He is survived by: his loving
family, parents, Larry D. Jones, Sr. and Lin L. Jones, Harriman; sisters,
Chantal M. Jones, Knoxville, Liana D. Jones of Oak Ridge. Larry was a fourth year
apprentice for the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Local ## 102. "You will
always be missed and treasured in our loving memories. We love you so much."
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Weatherford Mortuary on
Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Michael Woods officiating. The family requests that
memorials be sent to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 332 N.
Lauderdale ST., Memphis, TN, 38105 or to the Susan G. Komen Race for The Cure, Breast
Cancer Center, PO Box 11772, Knoxville, TN 37939. The family will receive
friends on Wednesday from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge.
SCHORN, PAULINE S. - age 87, of Clinton, passed away Saturday, February 14,
2004 at the Windwood Health Care Center. Born Jan. 22 1917 in Laudendale,
Calf. She was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Clinton. Preceded in
death by: husband Victor Schorn; parents, Henry G. Stumpe and Mary Peters;
several brothers and sisters and a grandson. Survivors: daughters, Mary Schron of
Oak Ridge, Virginia and husband Steve of Anderson County; sons, John and wife
Ethel of Knox County, Charles and wife Desiree of Dallas Texas; brothers, Henry
Stumpe of Florence, Harold and wife Helen Peters of Florence, Alabama;
sister in law, Doris Bates of Haddon Heights, New Jersey; 7 grandchildren; several
nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday
February 17, 2004 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. A Funeral Mass will
be held Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at 10:00 at St. Therese Catholic Church
with Rev. Gerald Finucane officiating. Interment will follow the Mass at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton in charge of all
arrangements.
TAYLOR, MARSHALL - Mr. Marshall Taylor was born April 28, 1923, in Lancing,
TN, and passed into Heavenly Rest on February 14, 2004 at his home in
Cumberland Gap, TN. He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Mrs. Wilma Griffith
Taylor; daughter, Angela of Knoxville; daughters, Annette (Mrs. Glenn Cobb) and
Teresa (Mrs. John Adams) of Cumberland Gap; son, Jerry (and wife Mary) of
Nunnelly; daughter, Janice (Mrs. Robert Shannon) of Oliver Springs; grandchildren and
families, Meggan and Nonica Cobb; Sarah Adams; Starr Taylor; Jill Baker; Gary
and Steven Mayes; Caroline Cooper; Darin, Bob, and Billy Shannon; Suzanne
Poole; Jennifer Blackburn, and Donna Goins; 22 great grandchildren;
daughter-in-law, Judy Sutphin; sisters, Pearlie burns, Indy Stringfield and Ernie Hamby;
brother, Earlie; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and church family. Mr.
Taylor was preceded in death by: a daughter, Judy Ann; son-in-law, Eugene
Shannon; mother and father, Charlie and Sarah Gibson Taylor; brothers, Alfred,
Andrew, Roscoe, and Harry; and sisters, Artie and Bessie Leannie. He was a coal
miner all his working life and retired from Consolidation Coal Company in 1989
and enjoyed woodworking. He was a faithful member of Summey's Bridge Baptist
Church. He was initiated on May 27, passed on June 30, and raised on July 29,
1950, by Emerald Lodge No. 377 Free and Accepted Masons in Wartburg, TN, and was
a past Master. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Monday,
February 16, 2004, with the funeral services immediately following in the Chapel
of Coffey Funeral Home in Harrogate, TN. Rev. John Hatfield and Rev. David
Bolton presiding. Music will be provided by Charles McMurray and Family and The
Shannon Family. Graveside services will be at 11 am at the Harrogate Cemetery on
Tuesday, February 17, 2004. Masonic services 7:40 pm Mon. evening. Coffey
Funeral Home, Harrogate, TN in charge of arrangements.
