Cecil Edward "Eddie" Russell, 51, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004,
at St. Mary's Residential Hospice in Knoxville, of cancer.
Born June 5, 1952, at Rockwood Chamberlain Memorial Hospital, Mr. Russell
graduated from Rockwood High School in 1970. He served in the U.S. Navy from
November 1971 until May 1974 and then in the Naval Reserves until May 1978. Mr.
Russell attended Knoxville Vocational School and was a licensed medical
laboratory technician. He was employed by Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge and
worked in the chemistry department of the hospital until the time of his death.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. In
December 2003, he graduated from VBC Bible Institute in Roan Mountain with a
bachelor's degree in theology. His hobbies included Bible study, reading and doing
cross-stitch.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 28 years, Nancy Russell; his daughter,
Elizabeth Russell; his father, James E. Russell, of Jefferson City; his
mother, Nellie Miles Russell, of Rockwood; his sister, Kim Murphy and husband,
Emery; a nephew, Jason Morgan; and by a niece, Sarah Murphy, all of Alpharetta,
Ga.
He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Robert Jenkins of Oak Ridge and
Leroy Jenkins and wife, Clara, of Greeneville; a nephew, David Jenkins, and his
family of Smyrna; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins in Rockwood.
Fred and Shirley Williams, of Powell, were considered special friends.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Calvary Baptist
Church with the Rev. Steve McDonald and the Rev. Charles Kelly officiating.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park. Military rites will be provided by the Volunteer State War Era Honor
Guard.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the
Missions Fund of Calvary Baptist Church, 163 N. Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge,
TN 37830.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Paul Leonard Frost Jr., 49, of Clinton, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004.
Born Nov. 21, 1954, in Knoxville, he was the son of Paul Leonard Frost Sr.,
now deceased, and Pauline Stadifer Frost.
Mr. Frost was a Baptist. He was a welder with BNFL Inc., and a member of the
Plumbers and Steam Fitters local 102 in Knoxville. He served in the U.S. Navy
for four years. According to his family, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and
riding motorcycles. His family said he was very active in the Anderson County Toy
Run Inc.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lois
Bridges.
Mr. Frost is survived by his wife, Janice Chesney Frost; his daughter Amber
Frost; three sisters, Catherine Cooper and husband, James, Shirley Smith and
husband, Clifton, and Teresa Cook and husband, Steve; his brother, Eddie Frost;
his sister-in-law, Sandra Chesney; his former wife, Debra Frost; and by
several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge
Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Shelton, of Gateway Church of God, officiating.

Celestine M. Johnston, 86, of Oak Ridge died at her residence on Thursday,
Jan. 1, 2004.
Born on Nov. 30, 1917, in Jackson County, Ark., she was the daughter of the
late Louis and Evalena Sandy Matthews.
Mrs. Johnston was a Baptist and was a born-again Christian. She was very
active in her church, teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, as well as
being active in the Missionary Society.
In her hometown, she served as a counselor for troubled people who were
referred to her by doctors. She also cared for and fed many homeless people.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, working in ceramics and crocheting.

Mrs. Johnston is survived by two sons, Andy Johnston of Oak Ridge and Carl L.
Johnston of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Gloria Stevenson of New York; five
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Oak Ridge Memorial
Park.

Zelpha Tallent Rice, 69 of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at her home.

Born July 16, 1934, in Spring City, she was the daughter of Alfred and Grace
McCartt Tallent.
Mrs. Rice had worked as an accountant with EG&G ORTEC. She came to Oak Ridge
in 1966 from Soddy Daisy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister.
Mrs. Rice is survived by her husband, Orlenas Rice; her daughter, Donna
Rice-Bassett and husband, Edward W., of Boston, Mass.; her brother, Charles William
Tallent, of Soddy Daisy; and by her granddaughter, Katherine Angeline
Neslund, of Atlanta, Ga.
The funeral was Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary
with the Rev. David Tabor officiating.
A graveside service was to be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at Spring City
Cemetery in Spring City.

Herbert Cleveland, 84, of the Marlow community of Anderson County, died
Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Harriman Care and Rehab Center.
Born Dec. 27, 1919, in South Pittsburg, he was the son of Charlie Cleveland
and Louise Anderson Cleveland. He had lived in Anderson County since 1943. He
retired from Union Carbide at the Oak Ridge K-25 site as a welder after 38
years service. He was a 32 degree Master Mason and a member of Faith Masonic
Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Ann
Cleveland; two stepsons, William Duncan and Robert Duncan; a stepdaughter,
Pauline Steed; a stepgranddaughter, Donna Edwards; two brothers, Sherman Cleveland
and Marlin Cleveland; and by two sisters, Grace Kilgore and Letha Smith.
Mr. Cleveland is survived by a stepson, Paul Duncan and wife, Rosalie, of the
Marlow community of Anderson County; 20 stepgrandchildren; several
stepgreat-grandchildren; and by several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, in the chapel of Sharp
Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Frederick J. Schafer, 78, of Titusville, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004.
Born in Duluth, Minn., he moved to Titusville from Oak Ridge in 1960. He was
a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. Mr. Schafer retired from Pan
American World Airways and Computer Science Raytheon. He was a Christian.
Mr. Schafer is survived by his wife, Charlotte; four sons, Fred III and Eric,
of Titusville, Carl of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Mark of Orlando, Fla.;
his daughter, Donna Hemke of Tampa, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Betty
Johnson, of Oak Ridge; a brother, Don Schafer, of Oak Ridge; and by several nieces
and nephews of Oak Ridge.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Park Avenue
Baptist Church in Titusville.

Ruth M. Stemple, 88, of Parkersburg, W. Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003,
at St. Joseph Hospital in Parkersburg.
Born in Tucker County, W. Va., she was a daughter of Delpha and Clarice White
Stemple. She was a 1933 graduate of Thomas High School and a 1938 graduate of
the West Virginia University.
Miss Stemple taught mathematics and science for 13 and 1/2 years in the
public schools of Grant and Logan counties in West Virginia. In 1955, she earned
her master's degree in library science from Florida State University. She was a
senior reference librarian at WVU and the documents/map librarian at FSU.
Miss Stemple was the head librarian at the agriculture-engineering library at
WVU and the reference librarian/bibliographer at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory.
She was a member of the Beta Phi Mu, the International Library Science
Honorary, FSU School of Library Science Alumni, and the Order of Eastern Star,
Walter Chapter No. 43, in Davis, W. Va.
Miss Stemple is survived by five brothers and their wives, Robert and Myrtle
Stemple of Belpre, Ohio, Col. James and Jeanne Stemple of Arlington, Va.,
Joseph and Loretta Stemple of Warner Robbins, Ga., and David and Marion Stemple of
New Martinsville, W. Va.; two sisters, Patricia Dubois and her husband,
Gerald, of Arlington, and Jeanne Bucklew of Fairmont; a brother-in-law, Joseph
Johnston of Parkersburg; a sister-in-law, Dolores Stemple of Belpre; and by
several nieces, 52 grandnieces and grandnephews, and seven great-nieces and
great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters, John Stemple,
Richard Stemple, Elizabeth Walters, Mary Westervelt and Roberta Johnston, and by
one niece.
The body was cremated and burial was at Aurora Cemetery in Aurora, W. Va. A
memorial service will be held at a later date.

Guen "Mom-Mom" Lewis, 87, of Clinton, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Mariner
Health of Norris.
After graduating from Clinton High School and attending business college,
Mrs. Lewis owned and operated a hair salon in Clinton. She worked at the French
Room for Miller's department store in Knoxville. She was a bridal consultant
for Loveman's department store and retired from The Ladies Toggery in Clinton,
where she prepared window displays and coordinated fashion shows.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of First Baptist Church in Clinton and in earlier
years, she worked with Girls Auxiliary and Sunday School classes. In addition,
she was past president of the Clinton Business and Professional Women's Club.
Being the family caregiver, her family said she took pride in her loved ones and
helped her parents and husband through long illnesses. According to her
family, her devotion to her family sparked her interest in genealogy which led to
the research of 11 lineages of her family back to the early 1600s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold F. "Hap" Lewis, and by her
parents, Kelly M. and Minnie L. Goins.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by her daughter, Minnie Jane and husband, Mounir N.
AbdulRahman; four grandsons, Nabil AbdulRahman, Naef AbdulRahman, Khalid
AbdulRahman and Hassan AbdulRahman; her sister, Lorene G. Holt; her nephew, David G.
Holt, all of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews, all of West
Tennessee.
The family said they would like to thank the staff at Mariner Health of
Norris for their kindness and care given to Mrs. Lewis during her illness.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at Holley-Gamble Funeral
Home in Clinton with the Rev. Sam Dean officiating.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Leach Cemetery in Lake City.

First Baptist Church, Youth Ministry, 222 N. Main St., Clinton, TN 37716.

Vada B. Radcliffe, 82, of Huber Heights, Ohio, formerly of Oak Ridge, died
Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Spring Creek Nursing Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George R.; a daughter, Connie
Kanipes; a son, George R. III; and by a daughter-in-law, Mildred.
Mrs. Radcliffe is survived by a daughter, Teresa Hammonds, of Huber Heights;
a son, Michael, of Alexandria, Va.; a stepdaughter, Carla Radcliffe, of
Tennessee; a stepson, George R. Jr. and wife, Nadine, of Florida; two sisters, Ruth
and Doris; and by a brother, Freelin Farmer.
She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Rahn Kanipes, Scott Kanipes,
Jimmy Crider, Tammy Crider, Robby Crider, Jonny Crider and Suzy Radcliffe; and by
four great-grandchiren, Trinity Kanipes, Kathryn Kanipes, Tabitha Powers and
Kyle Eaton.
The funeral was to be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Marker & Heller
Funeral Home in Huber Heights.
Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

George Robert Goebel, 58, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at the
University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Goebel; his son, George R. Goebel Jr.; his
mother, Bertha Goebel; and by his sister, Carolyn Hopke.
The funeral was to be at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Weatherford
Mortuary.
The family was to receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.

Dr. Burl E. Gilliland, 76, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 1,
2004, due to medical complications from lung cancer.
He was born in Chandler Mountain, Ala. He retired as a distinguished
professor emeritus from the University of Memphis in 1997, where he was twice elected
by students and faculty as distinguished professor of the year. Dr. Gilliland
helped develop the doctorate program in counseling psychology at the
university and co-authored graduated level textbooks in psychology and counseling and
crisis intervention strategies.
At his retirement, his family said his doctoral students planted a water oak
tree on the campus to commemorate his contribution to their lives. Also while
in Memphis, he consulted with the Memphis Police Department in setting up a
Crisis Intervention Training Program. In 1978, he was awarded the Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Human Rights Award in recognition of his devotion to the ideals
of social justice and non-violence.
Before becoming a professor, he was a guidance counselor and later chairman
of the guidance department at Oak Ridge High School from 1960 to 1969. He was a
retired captain of the U.S. Navy and a decorated veteran of World War II and
the Korean conflict. His family said he was also a celebrated carver of
whimsical twig animals.
Dr. Gilliland is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha; two daughters,
Carol and Ruth; six brothers, Kenneth, Corley, Lee, Hershel, Bill and Mark; and
by a sister, Rubye Phillips.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Chandler
Mountain Baptist Church in Steele, Ala.
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to a
charity of the donor's choice.

Patricia Higgins Taylor, 40, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003.
Born Dec. 23, 1963, in Oak Ridge, she was the daughter of Ted and Elsie
Shubert Higgins, both now deceased. Mrs. Taylor worked at A Mark Cleaners. She was
a graduate of Oak Ridge High School.
Mrs. Taylor is survived by her son, Matthew Malone; her daughter, Marlee Kay
Malone; and by her sister, Barbara Perry, of Oak Ridge.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park.

John Ambrose Riner Sr., 66, of Knoxville, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at
Baptist Hospital West in Knoxville.
Born July 15, 1937, in Alabama, he was the son of Charles Phillip and Hallie
Hunter Riner, both now deceased.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a member of Beaver Ridge
Masonic Lodge No. 366, Scottish Rite, and Shriner. He worked for MK Ferguson as a
lineman and a member of their local lodge No. 270. He was a member of Trinity
Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters Elsie
Arnez, Wanda Southard and Mary Wolf, and by one brother, Bill Riner.
Mr. Riner is survived by two sons John A. Riner Jr. and Mark Riner, both of
Kingston; and his daughter, Pamela Day and companion, Larry; a brother Charles
Riner and wife, Betty, of Oliver Springs; two sisters, Bonnie Butler and
husband, Ottis, of Knoxville and Ingrid Codding and husband, James, of Chicago,
Ill.; a grandchild, Holly Day; two special nieces, Christine "Tina" Southard and
Deborah "Deb" Cobb; and by a special friend, "Bo."
A graveside service was to be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Anderson
Memorial Gardens on the Oliver Springs Highway.

Ellen Elizabeth Early Lamkin Boya, 79, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, Dec. 31,
2003, at her home.
She was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Brown County in Texas.
Mrs. Boya was a member of Solway Baptist Church. She attended Howard Payne
College in Brownwood, Texas, and majored in education. She taught school for 28
years in Robstown, Texas, and Los Fresnos, Texas.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Waters Lamkin, killed in action
during World War II, and Ted Boya Sr.; two children, Laurellen and Ted Boya Jr.;
and by a grandchild, Tim Boya.
Mrs. Boya is survived by a daughter, Debbie Hackney and husband, Ted; a
sister, Hallie Johnson and husband, Bill, of San Angelo, Texas; two grandchildren,
Alan Hackney and Otis Hackney and wife, Ashley; and by four
great-grandchildren, Taylor Hackney, Kristian Hackney, Jacob Hackney and Bailey Ellen Hackney.
The funeral was Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at Solway Baptist Church with Ray
Buchanan officiating.
Burial followed at Lebanon Cemetery in Karns.

Raymond Albert "Ray" Koteski, 81, of Powell, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at
St. Mary's Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 2, 1922, in Natrona, Pa., of Allegheney County, as the
youngest of eight children. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He
retired in April 1984 after 39 years of service in various departments of the
operations division at the Union Carbide Oak Ridge K-25 site.
At age 14, he was honored with the American Legion Plaque based on scholastic
and athletic achievements in his elementary school years. At age 18, he was
captain of the basketball team at Har-Brach High School and received the
section I trophy as most valuable player. Mr. Koteski was honored with an athletic
scholarship playing basketball for the "Demon Deacons" of Wake Forest
University in North Carolina. He graduated with a degree in chemistry and was a member
of Gamma Sigma Epsilon honorary fraternity and the 1942-1943 Monogram Club.
Mr. Koteski was a member of the Sequoyah Duplicate Bridge Club and the ACBL.
His civic activities included youth work, coaching and church involvement.
The family would like to acknowledge a special friend, Dick Beaver, who
co-chaired the annual fall festival and helped coach the basketball teams at St.
Joseph Elementary School.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Charlotte Holden Koteski,
in 2001.
Mr. Koteski is survived by four daughters, Frances McGaha and husband, Jim,
of Seabrook, Texas, Mary St. John, Charlotte Ann Higginbotham and husband,
Richard Jr., of Knoxville, and Cathy Mikkola and husband, Bob, of North Grafton,
Mass.; 10 grandchildren, Christy McGaha, Chris St. John and wife, Shelley, Kim
Skeen and husband, Rick, Tobie Funte, Sandy St. John, Allen Higginbotham and
wife, Kim, Ray Higginbotham, Matthew Higginbotham, Ashley Mikkola and Meredith
Mikkola; three great-grandsons, Parker St. John, Casey St. John and Clay
Skeen; and by several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was to be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Holy Ghost
Catholic Church with the Rev. Xavier Mankel officiating.
Burial was to follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
