survived by two sisters and their spouses, Jane and Norman Teasley of Oak
Ridge, and Jeannie and Nolan Carter of Clinton, S.C. A brother, John Gurney, died
previously while in medical school. Dr. Gurney was a graduate of one of the
first classes of Oak Ridge High School and continued his education at Erskine
College where he received a degree in chemistry. He returned to Oak Ridge in
1950 and worked at the Y-12 Plant. In 1952 he followed in his grandfather's,
father's and brother's footsteps and returned to school to become a doctor. He
received his medical training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Gurney
returned to Oak Ridge in 1956 and worked in industrial medicine for Union
Carbide Corporation. In 1957 he began a solo family practice which he sustained for
over 35 years. For a number of years his practice included delivering babies

remembered by his patients as an "old fashioned" doctor and one who listened.
He was appointed Chief of Staff of the Oak Ridge Hospital of the Methodist
Church and served two years in the 1960's. He was also a member of the Roane
Anderson Medical Society and served as its delegate to the Tennessee Medical
Association several times. Interested in civic affairs, Dr. Gurney was elected to
serve on the city's second charter commission charged with fine-tuning the
city's original charter. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to hike.
He hiked for 17 consecutive years with the Oak Ridge "Social Climbers" to the
top of Mount LaCont in the Smokies. It was on many of these fishing, hunting
and hiking trips that the played the harmonica much to the delight of his
friends. "Amazing Grace" was a favorite. His love for travel took him on journeys
throughout the world. On one occasion he served as chaperone for the Oak Ridge
High School's International Relations Club trip to Europe, a trip filled with
interesting happenings. Prior to moving to Morristown in 1999, he was an active
member of the Fellowship Class of First United Methodist Church. He also sang
in the choir. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 7, 2003, at
