Thelma "June" Robbins, 74, of Kingston, formerly of Clinchco, Va., and
Dayton, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at her home after a long illness.She was
the daughter of Willard Webb and Maudie Jordan of Clinchco.Mrs. Robbins was a
member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Kingston. She grew up in Clinchco and
Woodway, Va., where she met her husband. She moved to Dayton in the 1940s to
work for the Veteran's Administration and she and William George "Bill" Robbins
of St. Charles, Va., were married in Dayton in 1950.After her children
entered school, Mrs. Robbins worked at and became manager of Traveler's/Travelodge
Motel and retired after more than 15 years of service. Upon retirement in 1977,
she moved with her husband to Kingston. They also maintained a residence in
Englewood, Fla., where they spent the winter months.According to her family,
Mrs. Robbins enjoyed swimming and competing with the women's basketball team at
Pennington Gap High School, where she graduated in 1947.During the lean years
in Ohio, Mrs. Robbins became a self-taught seamstress, who made her own
clothes, often from other pieces of clothing. She also made ballet suits for the
girls in her daughter's dance class, and a full suit and play costumes for her
son. Her family said retirement allowed her creative nature to flourish,
producing beautiful stained glass pieces and jewelry creations, which she showered on
her family and friends.In addition to her husband of 53 years, Mrs. Robbins
is also survived by two children, William "Ralph" Robbins of New York, N.Y.,
and Lisa Gale Robbins of Kingston; four siblings, Elizabeth "Mae" Mullins, her
twin, of Bristol, Va., Betty Howard of Sarasota, Fla., Frankie Fields McMillan
of Okeechobee, Fla., and Jimmy Fields of Burkburnett, Texas; and by several
other family members.Her family said many will miss her wonderful smile,
personality and quick wit, and she touched the lives of many, including Bill Moody of
New York, Bill McMillan of Okeechobee, Joe Scolaro of Sarasota, Ralph and
Mary Helen Cox of Pennington Gap, Va., the Rev. James and Shelby Robbins of
Saltville, Va., and Lorraine and Hershell Pennington of Gate City, Va.The family
said they gratefully acknowledge the staff at Adventa Hospice.A memorial service
will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Sturgill Funeral Home in
Pennington Gap.Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Lee Memorial Gardens
in Woodway.The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations
to Adventa Hospice, 1420 Dutch Valley Road, Knoxville, TN 37918.The family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
